Very important story for people like Robert and I who have been partnered for nearly 20 years and have had to endure the pain of people going into a voting booth to decide if we were worthy if marriage. I'm sure you all know someone who cries out against gay marriage because they claim it'll destroy the sanctity of traditional marriage. Yet many of these people are either divorced, cheating on their spouse or living with someone of the opposite sex. Apparently preserving the sanctity of marriage only applies when gays are involved.

Congresswoman Titus barely lost her election precisely because the Democrats CAVED on their true values and removed the popular "public option" from the health care table. Democrats stayed home in droves because their leaders at the top behaved like Republicans! Keeping your children on your insurance until they are 26 if they can't get any is a GOOD thing. Not getting dropped from your coverage because you've become sick is a GOOD thing. Making it illegal for insurance companies to turn you down because you have a pre-existing condition is a GOOD thing...and much, much more. The former congresswoman will win this election once she starts speaking loudly in favor of health care, social security and Medicare

Seem to also recall many years ago when I moved here from California and I had misplaced my old driver license, I was told I needed either my birth certificate or a "baptismal certificate" to get my new license. My original birth certificate wasn't handy, and 2 weeks later I had it, but when I presented them with a "certificate of birth" from Brooklyn Jewish hospital, it was deemed insufficient. I always wondered how they could do that and if its still a practice of the Nevada DMV today.

...and the new Smith Center for the Performing Arts is gorgeous! It's located at Symphony Park. I would suggest to some nay sayers to Google it up and take the virtual tour. Finally, a theater destination that is truly world class. Robert and I just purchased our 2012 Broadway theater subscription yesterday and we look foward to dining and theater-going downtown!

This was the first time the census bureau took a count specifically towards the gay community. Mind you, this is a determination of COUPLES. Robert and I were counted as a couple but there was no way for us to declare our legal marriage (Canada, 2004). And FAR more of our gay acquaintances , fellow Nevadans ,are not partnered at all.
We appreciate the opportunity to be counted as it means that the legal issues and hurdles we face can now be addressed in a fair way.

Let's celebrate with a tea party!

So here we live in the "marriage capital of the world", Las Vegas, where two complete strangers, a man and a woman, can share a few drinks at the bar in the casino I work at, walk across the street to the courthouse and "marry". Of course, these folks who barely know each other will now be eligible for all 1000 rights and privileges that marriage will give to them.
Robert and I will always be grateful to Canada for treating us with the dignity and respect that two people who love each other deserve. We are Americans who love America but were grateful that there was a place to go that would allow us the opportunity to express our love and commitment".and now add the great State of New York!
To our newest Mayor Goodman I would remind her not to be so sanctimonious about marriage. Here in Las Vegas we offer DRIVE THROUGH WEDDINGS!! People get married here by ELVIS IMPERONATORS, in HOT AIR BALOONS, OY! Brittany Spears loved getting married here...for the whole of 2 or 3 days!
How sad that our new mayor and other Nevadans were duped into believing that Robert's and my marriage can really hurt their own. Anything for votes, we suppose. Ensign, anybody? Gibbons? Bill Clinton? Mark Sanford? And Newt Gingrich is STILL out there "defending" his THREE or FOUR marriages!
Robert and I were celebrating 10 years together when we were married in Canada SEVEN years ago this July. Seventeen years together your Honor, and yet the gaming company I work for, which has I believe a very sincere diversity policy, does not offer me the benefits that those two strangers who met at the casino bar would get. There is none of the added security that only marriage provides for our personal welfare if something should G-d forbid happen to Robert or myself. And I love what I do for a living. I only ask to be treated as equally as my fellow hard working co-workers. There is no FMLA for me and Robert. Nothing. A reminder Mayor Goodman, Robert and I are family, too.
We hope that one day Americans will appreciate the legacy of true religious freedom granted to us by the framers of our constitution. I would not expect to be married in your Synagogue, Madam Mayor. And the drive-through and Elvis weddings are not our style either. Future generations will be ashamed to know what Americans did in our sacred voting booths when they voted to judge people and strip them of their civil rights. During one of your debates you appeared so clueless. What were you thinking? You and your husband are so much better than that.
We know you have a good heart. And now as our mayor you have an oppertunity to do what so many in our recent history have failed to do...be a leader. And some unsolicited advice. You have two GREAT sources to draw opinion from...your husband, and on this issue, former Mayor Jan Jones.

Look, I supported and voted for Dina Titus and may just do so again...maybe not. I'm willing to give Congressman Dr. Heck a shot, but if he keeps on going the way of the Ryan Budget and morphing Medicare and Social Security into "privatized" programs, well folks, forget that.
Ms. Titus lost by only 2000 votes. I know many progressives who sat out the election because the Democrats didn't negotiate for a "public option" in the new health care law, which btw is turning out to be a blessing for many people. No more preexisting conditions for an insurance company to deny your claim. You can keep your kids on your insurance now til they are 26 if they can't qualify for any on their own. For many of us who have run up hundreds of thousands of dollars in hospital bills, no more caps on coverage. We ALL know people who have been there...maybe even YOU.
The Dems failed in the last election because they were running as Republican lite, NOT because the country took a sharp turn to dismantle our way of life. Ms. Angle, anybody?
Even repealing "don't ask, don't tell", a move supported by an OVERWHELMING majority of Americans couldn't be accomplished by the Dems until AFTER the election in a lame duck session. I know folks who stayed out of the last election because of that, too! Robert and I were staying home last election, til she called on us personally to motivate us to get out and vote.
Frankly, I could care less if she eats her cheese individually wrapped. Or if she drinks a cheap wine. Maybe Speaker Boehner drinks an even cheaper wine. As long as Congresswoman Titus promoted policy that benefited us and managed her affairs legally, well then, that's fine with me. John Ensign should have taken lessons from Ms. Titus on moral behavior and good policy. And we will look to see if Congressman Heck has the independence to vote to protect the programs that our parents and grandparents promised future generations of Americans which made our country great.

My congressman Dr. Heck says: "I believe in cutting government waste and I have been a vocal advocate of eliminating programs that have outlived their purpose or have lost sight of their original mission, I also know that government does have a limited role in helping people help themselves."
Respectfully Congressman, Social Security and Medicare were promises made to future generations of Americans by our parents and grandparents who suffered mercilessly from the great depression. In today's tough economic times the one demographic that has withstood the storm the best have been our seniors. Thank G-d for Social Security and Medicare!
It is shameful that the demographic which has benefited most from economic policies over the last decade are the ones NOT being asked to pony up and do the right thing for America. We are told that rolling back the tax rates to the Clinton days so that the top 2% wage earners, best known as people making over a quarter million dollars a year, would inhibit them from creating jobs. Well, Congressman Dr. Heck, with all those tax cuts I ask you "where are the jobs"? Congressman Dr. Heck, 22 MILLION jobs were created during the 90's when the tax rates were fairer. Businesses flourished. Where is this so called "trickle down" that these tax cuts were supposed to create? Giving these good folks the tax breaks while fighting two wars and and padding the profits of the pharmaceutical industries through Medicare Part D is a good chunk of what got us into this mess.
Congressman Dr. Heck, Medicare CAN be properly funded. Vouchers and privatization with no mechanization to controlling costs is what you stand for? Must be. After all, you voted to repeal our new health care law without offering up an alternative. You could have had an alternative, Congressman. Everybody knew that the health care system was broken. Repeal just for the sake of repealing it? Was there no consideration by your vote for the folks who can now have their children kept insured until they are 26? Was there no consideration for the readers here who have a preexisting conditions and will still be able to keep their insurance thanks to the new law? How about the caps on coverage, Congressman Heck? This, to you, was a bad start at reform?
Truth be told, I don't believe the last election was a mandate for radical change to the programs that have benefited millions of Americans. If voters were scared off by the sky falling over health care, well, let us see how they react to the dismantling of all that our parents and grandparents built to make our country great.
