It should be noted that I was never contacted for a formal, serious request for comment. I've gotten a few "why was this deleted?" comments before; my response to Shaunchristmas' user talk page is a typical response. I don't advertise it, but I can be emailed - on the left column of my user page is an "Email this user" link.
The path to deletion started when the article was crreated. It showed up in Special:Newpages, where a person patrolling the area believed it met a criteria for speedy deletion (CSD). He or she then tagged it, and it landed in the CSD category, which I was patrolling, and I believed the tag to be correct and deleted the article. I did not stumble upon it while reading the GTA articles.
If I had been provided with links that showed that the band was notable, I would have most certainly re-created the article myself or given my approval for it to be recreated (although that is not necessary; as long as the article is recreated with sufficient context and links, it will not be deleted).
