LVSun: "The Republican leaders' hyperbole only serves to rally their party's base in an election year."
The Reps don't need to resort to hyperbole to rally its base. Its enough having a Marxist in the White House to do that.
Perhaps Jon you should also focus on the school district. While pleading poverty and cutting teachers, they are also hiring more staff. For example, the communications department is looking to hire a new Public Information Officer. This position is an administrative one yet the PIO's have no span of control, i.e., no one to supervise.
So teachers are not important for educating children but spending happy face news releases is?
I remember participating in the LVSun forum back in 1970. The students you are referring to are all journalism students. Of course they are engaged, articulate and intelligent. Most are in the top of their class. They read, discuss and debate the issues on a daily basis because they are involved in writing for their perspective newspaper.
They certainly are not reflective of the general student body.
The biggest problem pedistrians are bus riders. They come off the bus and then imediately cross the street just a few yards from a stoplight and crosswalk. Since most bus stops are near interspections, there is no reason why bus riders jaywalk into traffic except pure laziness.
Ah the "Glory Days," during the time I was a student at UNLV. The campus was smaller and the student population were mostly commuters. The whole 5 1/2 years I studied at UNLV during the "Shark Tank" legacy, I attended one basketball game.
While UNLV was recognized as a "basketball school," the academic program lagged and students that attended were mostly locals wanting to get a college degree while stuck the cultural desert of Lost Wages.
I went on to attend America Graduate School of International Management I received comments on my UNLV t-shirt-"Great basketball team." Oh the pride just swelled inside me as I realized that my school was recognized for a sports team while the many students from around the world came out of academically superior schools.
Now my daughter is an engineering senior at UNLV getting a honors degree from an excellent engineering program that UNLV now offers. Yes, UNLV has changed for the better since the "Glory Days," now concentrating on providing strong academic programs and research facilities where students can have pride in their degrees instead on having a "Great basketball team."
The Glory Days of UNLV sports may have been nice for the locals, but today's UNLV is far better and more in line for providing Las Vegas a road to a better economy. Having a "great basketball team" is just stepping backwards to an era of false pride.
LVSUN-"The last we checked, the Constitution isn't limited to clean-cut, well-dressed Americans with clear agendas... Opposing view points are healthy in a democracy."
Only if it meets your standard of liberal speech. Otherwise its hateful, mean-spirted, radical, right-wing, etc.
Please LVSUN, your hypocrisy shines through even the most rabid polical correctness and speech codes that permeate the liberal agenda.
The Progressive's veiw of First Admendment Rights are only one way...the liberal way. All others need not apply.
While the Flea Baggers are marching on Wall St (paid by the unions to do so), why is no one marching on the unions?
Take about greed! Union fatcats would eat their young just for a pay increase-which means dues increased and more power.
Several years ago I coached the Mojave Girl's Softball team. The young women I coached were awesome! Majority of them had never played softball and I had to teach them the basics of throwing, hitting and catching. I also had to teach several pitchers.
While some of the other area high schools we played such as Centennial and Shadow Ridge had players who played for many years (I knew many of these players since I coached them in rec ball when they were 10 or 12 years old),the Mojave girls against such odds never gave up. They played their heart's out and gave it their all. I had several players who wanted to be on the team so bad they made sure to maintain the qualifying GPA to stay on the team.
Mojave has some great students that need just need some attention and guidence to be successful in school. Good luck with the new direction, these students deserve it.
LVSun: "." Although it has been pointed out by numerous people that Social Security is not a Ponzi scheme..." What numerous people? Who points this out? No references means no credibility.
Looking at the short definition of Ponzi Scheme: where it pays returns to separate investors, not from any actual profit earned by the organization, but from their own money or money paid by subsequent investors. Investors here are workers who are compelled to pay into a SS system that promises returns at retirement. However, the money paid by these workers is used to pay the present SS recipients- it is a pipeline, not an investment with any returns.
Presently it takes three workers to pay the benefits of one SS recipient. Take out government workers (because they pay into the system with tax dollars) and it is 1.75 workers for every one SS recipient. That means that an unmarried couple has one more hidden dependent they have to support.
You bet that Social Security is a Ponzi scheme, the system is destined to collapse because the earnings, if any, are less than the payments to the present recipients.

Such hyprocrisy from this liberal rag! When Clinton received oral sex with a young whitehouse intern in the Oval Office and then lied about it, libs were quick to defend that leadership matter more than character. Now the LVSun acts high and mighty about this as if it does now matter.
But for libs/socialist the ends justify the means. This is nothing more than a political football that the libs and the lame stream media trying to influence the Rep primaries. The hope is to get in a weak Rep candidate that can be defeated by Obama. Yet Obama has so much baggage this is a pipe dream by the liberal media.
Where was the LVSun when Obama came on the scene? What vetting did the liberal media do during the '08 campaign? For the liberal media, dems are hands off...
The only ones listen to this rubish are the libs and the mushy middle who can't think for themselves. Newt is not my first choice but anyone is better than a maxist in the White House. Another four years of the same failed policies will kill this country...and that is what the liberal media want.
