Gaughan is a good guy for not laying off (if it is true) -- I used to play there when gas was less expensive, and I would frequent the horse shows -- but I couldn't win anything there to save my life. I might go back on principal because he is doing the right thing, but loosening the slots would help. If I go and lose $100 in an hour on my one per line penny machine bets I'm out of there and I probably won't return.
Okay -- was it outside Tony Roma's or Marie Callendar's? Were the Spiltro brothers beaten or shot? You would think in Vegas the paper that has followed this man's life in detail would get some facts straight.
This is not a partisan thing -- it is pure GREED. How about not living above your means? How about not taking advantage of the less fortunate? How about not BREEDING? Let's face it -- human nature is really messed up. We'll never fix the real problem, and that is dwelling in the very heart of us all.
RIP Lefty -- a guy who truly understood gambling, casinos, and the psyche of the customer. All operators, and executives would should take a cue from his gamebook. Lefty advocated LOOSE Slots and GENEROUS Comps. Las Vegas wouldn't be in the mess it is today if the gaming corporations would practice what Rosenthal preached. Even in this economy, gamblers will gamble, and tourists will travel if they perceive they are appreciated and given a fair shake. Roll out the red carpet for EVERY customer . . . just watch the final scenes of the movie "Casino" (well, watch the whole movie, but pay special attention to the wrap up) and you will understand what set Lefty's world apart from the dire straits we are in today.
Jeez, Steve -- I could almost appreciate your glib, self serving message if I wasn't so distracted by Robin Leach's asskissing, your blinding chiclet veneers and too tight face lift.
This is just awful. The Plaza (Downtown) gets stripped of its name and identity by the big money. It just makes me sick, the same has happened to me, and I am severely depressed and penniless trying to keep alive a great American legacy. All that matters is money -- history and integrity aren't worth a damn. What a cruel world we live in. It just makes me sicker than I already am. The Trademark office is a total joke. The decisions they make don't make ANY sense. I believe this jury was led down a narrow path paved with money, and was not allowed to make a decision based on the simple facts.
Unbelievable. A jury of Nevadans decided this??? A foreign entity is allowed to crap all over a local business (also now foreign owned, but the house that Jackie built should still be shown some respect.) -- people must really hate the Plaza (downtown.) I personally have lost a long standing American trademark to a foreign business and let me tell you -- it is absolutely crushing, financially and morally. This is what is wrong with America and Las Vegas -- there is no value in history, it is all about the Benjamins. Las Vegas next year will be in the severe clutches of a DEEP Depression, and the city will begin emptying out. It's going to get a WHOLE lot worse before it gets better. If the foreign money can hold on they will own it all. America as we know it will be gone with the wind.
Okay -- students are NOT impacted, yet anyway . . that is the beauty and ignorance of youth. If they are in college then they are probably being funded by their parents. Jim Rogers would benefit in knowing how student funding REALLY works.
Oh, and just notice all the comments on this article -- this is an issue WE REALLY CARE ABOUT!!! We are more than willing to play the slots, if we can just get a little time, entertainment, and a perceived chance of winning for our dollar. Those days are over, now it is just an exercise in futility and NO FUN at all. I will be attending the Global Gaming Expo next month and have just one message to send to the industry . . . at least give the player a fighting chance and you won't have to worry about a weakening economy. Folks will always find an excuse to wager when they think they can win.

Well, at least this piece cleared up the bit about the parking lots (was it Marie Callendar's or Tony Roma's?) but the jury is still out on whether Lefty was left or right handed. On his website Rosenthal says he only saw "Casino" once and hated the scene where he juggled on his show -- he never did juggle, and he thought in the movie that made him look foolish -- the blueberry muffin scene is true though.
