VegasVegas,
Good points and analysis. However:
1) Gorman did NOT have better talent last year. They did have a lot of D-1 talent as usual but the strain was already showing with the former coach's conservative style clashing with these kids and their parents needing the ability to put up big numbers for the scouts. Overall, though, I don't think they had the same talent level as Palo's who they got trounced by.
2) I like the Gorman coach but I'm dying to see him go head to head in a close game situation with talented coaches like Palo's and LV's. Only then will we really know much about how good their coach is.
3) I don't know as much about the North this year but having to travel by bus to the North to play a semi-final over Thanksgiving weekend and then turn around to play in State the following weekend is a tough path for Gorman.
Gorman does give out scholarships, they are just labeled as "financial need" based. No public school can do this. A scholarship is a scholarship. Also, they give jobs on their campus to the parents of recruited athletes. Sheesh, I don't even think NCAA would allow that at the college level! Also, they play in the weakest of the 4 divisions in the valley and can make the too-expanded playoffs by barely doing more than fielding a team. We should eliminate divisions within the Sunset and Sunrise regions and have teams play a weighted schedule based on prior year performance---and, take less teams in the playoffs-especially football. If Gorman consistently had to play Palo, Cimarron, and Cheyenne in the regular season, it would be much more balanced. Actually, I think their players would like the greater challenge.
Same old Gorman. Sloppy executions and poor discipline, especially on special teams in this game. This is the reason why there was 24 years between the last two state titles-with far fewer teams than there are now. If they weren't in the weakest of the 4 divisions in the valley, or if there was more strength of schedule re-scheduling each year, they might even have a hard time making the playoffs-definitely the case if they decided to take 2 teams instead of the insane 4 teams they take now from each division. They installed a pro-style offense for one reason only this year-more recruits that are interested in putting up big numbers for Div I scholarships. I'm a former Gorman parent and wish them well but Gorman will always be a victim of its own success. Coach seems like a nice guy though.
Why do so many agencies still not have their labor agreements online and available for viewing? Labor is about 80% or more of public sector budgets. The public should see this.
