Warren Buffett, the 2nd richest man on the planet wants corporations to pay MORE taxes. Quote from 2006:
"Corporate income taxes in fiscal 2003 accounted for 7.4% of all federal tax receipts, down from a post-war peak of 32% in 1952. With one exception (1983), last year's percentage is the lowest recorded since data was first published in 1934. Even so, tax breaks for corporations (and their investors, particularly large ones) were a major part of the Administration's 2002 and 2003 initiatives. If class warfare is being waged in America, my class is clearly winning."
Buffett and many others agree that corporations are not paying their share.
Example: Nevada gold producers sell $6 billion (gross), net $2 billion (profit) and send Nevada $25 million (a 1% royalty on a precious metal that can never be replaced)
Can any idiot out there see the real problem?
New York "room tax" = 14%
Houston "room tax" = 17%
People still travel to these towns and pay the bill don't they?
Vegas, unlike other major destinations, can and must charge less for each room sold so the total cost is actually decreasing! DUH!
Stay in a 5 star hotel in Vegas for $125.00 per night or travel to New York and pay $855 at the Four Seasons (standard rate). If you didn't graduate from high school you can still figure out that 3 nights in New York will cost close to $3,000 dollars and even with the new tax, Vegas is under $500. Where is the average Joe or Jane going to go? Vegas if it is cheap enough!
Can't wait for Nevada to cry out for teachers and they won't come! Your kids, grandkids, and or college student has to join a lottery to get into a classroom. Test scores will decline due to overcrowding and more students will fail. Prisons will be the new "schools". But gold is $950 an ounce and billions go to Canada to support their schools and medical programs. Smart Mr. Gibbons, very smart indeed. I've flushed waste that is smarter than you are.
I can't wait to see the surprised look on the Nevada Legislature, when the Federal government steps in and tells Nevada to raise taxes for education, or a Federal judge will do it for them.
Be careful what you wish for ksand99, the cuts will backfire and Nevada is ripe for a major Federal education funding lawsuit that will be supported in the White House. Look for sales taxes to be increased to 11%.
Sorry Nance, the radio gods must not be dancing or singing the right tune. Someone has to pay for benefits, even if it means raising taxes. Repubs can't have it both ways- huge benefits and low taxes forever.
The biggest economic expansion in the history of the world was created during a time when the top earners paid a 91% tax rate. Everyone prospered, even the rich!. We are spoiled rotten children of prosperity. We don't realize what our parents and grandparents paid to build this county. Now it is just me me me - talk to Rush, he will explain it.
Marginal tax rates in our history for top earners.
1917- 67%
1918- 77%
1929 - 24% Right before the big depression
1930 - 25%
1932 - 63%
1936 - 79%
1942 - 88% The U.S. sacrifice for WWII
1944 - 94% Wow Nance only 6 cents of every dollar left over.
1951-1963 - Every year over 91% tax rate and we now have freeways.
1964-1980 - 70%
1987 - now - nothing above 40%
On Limbaugh! On O'Reilly! On dancer, on vixen, on comet and cupid. Run the entire state of Kalifornia into the ground over 12 cents of gas tax. OMG!!!- what a bunch of partisan idiots!
"It's a huge responsibility, and it's people's careers on the line," Schwarzenegger told The Times, alluding to threats by conservative bloggers and talk-radio hosts of political retaliation against Republicans who vote to raise taxes. "But I think in the end they know they have to make a decision what's best for the state."
Their Republican colleagues say what's best for California is no new taxes.
The plan supported by Democrats and Schwarzenegger, a moderate Republican, includes a 1 cent increase in the sales tax, would add 12 cents a gallon to the gas tax and would also boost vehicle license fees and the personal income tax.
REPUBLICANS = OBSTRUCTIONISTS PERIOD
The governor and legislative leaders from both parties warned that California faces insolvency unless the Legislature enacts a midyear budget fix.
Blame for the inaction was fixed on the state Senate, where Republicans were refusing to put up the three votes necessary to reach the required two-thirds majority. The Assembly appeared ready to pass the mix of deep spending cuts and tax increases but was awaiting signals that the Senate would do the same.
Obama's approval rating remains well above 60% in tracking polls. A range of state pollsters said they'd seen no diminution in the president's sky-high approval ratings, and no improvement in congressional Republicans' dismal numbers.
In 18 months the dow will hit 15000. Unemployment will decrease to under 6%. Housing and credit markets will stabilize and banks will lend again. Why you ask?
Part of the bailout includes a cap on bankers bonus structure until they pay back the federal monies they collected. They will fix this and return to the gluttony of the past as soon as possible.
Greed got us into this mess, and it will get us out of the mess. I applaud the Democrats for adding this provision into the bailout. Brilliant!
The world's biggest chipmaker says the investment will fund 7,000 jobs in Oregon, Arizona and New Mexico.
Don't see Nevada on the list! You ask why?
Funny, all of these states have an income tax and yet they will receive new jobs from Intel. Taxes really don't matter if the states give incentives and provides educated workers. Wow, what a concept.
Does the Nevada legislature even read the newspaper.
Truly- NEVADUH
Nance- Thermal solar power is coming on strong
More Elecricity than even the largest nuke-
Pull your damn head out buddy- solar is on the way like it or not.
The largest series of solar installations in history, more than 1,300 megawatts, is planned for the desert outside Los Angeles, according to a new deal between the utility Southern California Edison and solar power plant maker, BrightSource.
The momentous deal will deliver more electricity than even the largest nuclear plant, spread out among seven facilities, the first of which will start up in 2013. When fully operational, the companies say the facility will provide enough electricity to power 845,000 homes -- more than exist in San Francisco -- though estimates like that are notoriously squirrely.
The technology isn't the familiar photovoltaics -- the direct conversion of sunlight into electricity -- but solar thermal power, which concentrates the sun's rays to create steam in a boiler and spin a turbine.
"We do see solar as the large untapped resource, particularly in Southern California," said Stuart Hemphill, vice president of renewable energy and power at Southern California Edison. "It's barely tapped and we're eager to see it expand in our portfolio."
