I work for ZAP and the company never stated that the ZAP-X would be available in 2008. A blog speculated from a statement issued by a chinese supplier suggesting some "new vehicles" would be ready in 2008, and therefore speculated that the ZAP-X would be finished in 2008, but this speculation was incorrect and was not at all related to the ZAP-X, which I pointed out to the blogger. Unfortunately for some reason Wired picked up on this and reprinted it, citing it as fact. I've written and called Wired to clarify this, but they never responded to my letters, calls or emails.
The project never really left the drawing boards because it was quickly found to be too expensive for what ZAP believed the market would be near-term for electric vehicles. Since 2007 it was decided to focus more on the ZAP Alias, which has been making progress.
Note that ZAP is selling electric vehicles, one of the few companies that has street legal sedans and trucks for delivery today.
Mistakes happen when journalists fail to confirm their facts. I invite anyone who has questions about ZAP to contact the company.
