Its $15 to get in and free parking, that should be the message. What else can you do in this town for that much?
I think the obvious problem though is location, just like with the tennis tournament. Summerlin is a fantastic location in terms of setting and drawing in the right demographic of locals, but it ignores the obvious resource of the 200,000 visitors in town. If they could ever get the golf or tennis on the Strip it would see a huge bump in attendance. Probably even enough to invest quite a bit into getting the courses tougher to make it interesting for PGA players.
In any event the marketing of the event to draw in tourists has to get better. Locals are clearly showing their apathy for second-class events and minor league sports. Unless they get stars of the sport here none of these events are going to draw enough locals.
November and beyond will likely show an increase, some airlines are actually considering adding a little bit of capacity to the market as well. Why is it the local papers spend all their time rehashing the past instead of being insightful towards the future?
So what aren't we still capitalists here? Stores come and go, when lots go then rents go down and competitors go down. Then before you know it the conditions are ripe for a recovery as the survivors or the new entrants fill the void. There is tons of traffic in that area and it is the only good retail hub for almost a third of the valley, it won't ever have a lack of demand for long. The economy as it stands is pretty much insuring no other viable competition is going to come online.
If people were smarter and didn't just jump on any bandwagon of blame they'd realize these basics and the Sun probably wouldn't be printing these stories.
Good for them. This town thankfully continues to draw people who create realistic projects despite the endless blah blah blah from the naysayers. Perish the thought if Steve Wynn listened to all the whiners in this town when he started building the Mirage.
