Not only a smart economist with unparalleled institutional knowledge about our economy, but a great guy as well. Las Vegas lost a good person today... he will be missed.
These guys have about the same chance of getting a plea bargain as the St. Louis Rams have of winning the next three Super Bowls.
That'll happen in a state where 65% of mortgages are currently underwater.
"Alaska, A TRUE fiscal Conservative state."
Oh, you mean the same state that leads the nation in federal spending (AKA "pork") received per resident? That gets nearly $2 in federal spending for every dollar in federal taxes paid?
Kind of easy to pay out annual checks to all of your citizens when you're living large on the taxes paid by residents of the lower 48.
Memo to all of the new volunteers for Joe Heck's campaign -- Better hope he doesn't fall too far behind in the polls. Based on previous history, he might end up switching over to an easier race if the sledding gets too tough. Like Henderson dog catcher, maybe.
Jackpot is a LONG way from here... it's on the northeast side of Nevada on the Idaho state line. About 450 miles, I think.
Never been there, so couldn't tell you what's worth seeing there. But it would probably be an interesting road trip getting there...
Boris, Ameristar does not own any casinos in Las Vegas, even though it's based here.
They once owned the Fiesta Henderson (then known as the Reserve), but sold it to Station Casinos years ago. They haven't been in the market since.
About the only thing that can stabilize the market now are sweeping reductions in principal mortgage balances, in order to put a dent in the growing number of houses with massive negative equity balances.
But people think that's icky, and banks think it's more fun to foreclose (even though that option costs them more than chopping off a chunk of principal). And so the spiral continues.
When is Gillespie up for re-election again?

I can understand skepticism. But I'm frankly baffled so many people appear to be openly rooting for CityCenter to fail, and will probably be gleeful if it does.
Hate to break it to everyone, but since we haven't done squat to diversify our economy, tourism is pretty much it for us. And this is our last great chance to jump-start tourism.
If it goes down, we go down. Detroit-style down.
Now, I suppose that being able to say "I told you so!" will help keep a lot of people around here cheerful as the local unemployment rate passes 20%, the state budget deficit turns into the Grand Canyon, and more neighborhoods turn into tumbleweed ghost towns. But I, for one, would prefer to avoid that outcome. Call me crazy.
