It is nice to see some preservation going on in Las Vegas for a change. Now that they are starting to realize the importance of preserving what is left of Las Vegas historically , maybe that means that historic properties like The Sahara, Riveria, Tropicana , Circus Circus on The strip will escape the wrecking ball or as they like to do in Vegas the implosion party.

I agreee with the post from Chitownrik Las Vegas needs to look back to its roots. Hang on to what is left of old Las Vegas such as hotels such as The Sahara, Riveria, Flamingo, Tropicana etc renovate them and bring back a little of what the old strip was like in the good old days. Though resorts like The Mandalay Bay, Venetian, Bellagio(Love the Fountains!)etc are beautiful and are cities in within themselves , they will never have the special style and character that these old ones have. They offered cheap , but good dining, reasonably priced entertainemnt with style and class, not to mention thesedold Hotels/casinos had the best Neon signs on the strip! Saharas and Flamingos are still the best too. Vegas needs to stop building these monstrosities such as City Place which are going bankrupt anyways ( Look at Echelon Place where the elegant "Stardust" was it apparently has stalled and having financial problems too) and they are ugly and block the views like "Chitownrik" stated in their post. Las Vegas needs to renovate what they have and bring back a bit of the old strip.
I love Fremont St and go down there often when in Las Vegas to enjoy a bit of nostalgia. The historic Golden Gate(circa 1906) is awseme! Was just there last week and enjoyed their famous shrip coctail too for .99.
So hats off to the Luxor for attempting to bring back something reasonably priced to Vegas.

My husband and I come to Las Vegas every year(We just returned from Vegas last week) he for business and I for vacation and we always enjoy our stay at The elegant Mandalay Bay resort where his company puts us up each year. We do most of our dining there too, but last week we decided to one night find some dining a little bit cheaper which is hard to come by in Las Vegas now. Gone with the many hotels hit by the wrecking balls are the $5.00 buffetts. Among the last is the $7.99 one at the historic Sahara. So I told my husband lets go down to Fremont St there you get not only a taste of old Las Vegas with the older hotels/motels but where you can find the cheaper places to eat too. We decided on the buffet at The Fremont Casino Hotel, under $10.00 per person and fairly good too. Packed with people too who are having a good time and not paying full price for it either. So Iam all for bringing back some of old Las Vegas. It is ashame we cant bring back The historic "Sands" hotel too and the recently closed "Folies Beigere' , but at least The classic old "Tropicana" Hotel continues to stand gracefully on the strip at least for now.
