Seems to me that this isn't an evil, cash stripping scheme. I think they would go through the $18 million mentioned in the story through the purchase and/or building of a 200,000 sf facility, along with equipment and employing 300 people for 6 months. Although at 65%, this is pretty large, resizing a workforce is pretty common in the first year, or so. Don't casinos routinely overstaff for their openings by about 20%?
I think a better question would be if the company has enough work to continue to operate as a going concern in it's new configuration.
I'm not sure what the issue is about workers not knowing if they were permanent or temporary employees. Does the law say they should be treated differently if they are separated from the company in a year, or less?
Given the zealous way that the ACLU has worked to protect freedom of access to the Strip, I can't see where this proposed ban has a chance of standing up under legal scrutiny. The biggest issue I see is that a dog is not, inherently, a threat to public safety. Maybe proof (through tags) of immunization and a muzzle would be the only thing that could be a limit, IMO.
It seems like a lot more proposed laws are really just grandstanding by politicians who know they don't have a snowballs chance of holding up. Seems like it would be cheaper and easier for all proposed laws to be sent to the State Attorney General's office for review. Potentially saving millions of dollars in attorney fees that are spent defending laws that are probably unconstitutional from the start.
This may be simplistic, but an example of their failure to change is their tools. Craftsman used to be the best consumer hand tool available. Wrenches, sockets, screw drivers and tool boxes. Now Lowe's is selling the Kobalt brand, which is made by Snap-On, and the smooth chrome design makes them look better. For less money! The market is flooded with Chinese made tools. Many of which work better (or as good), are cheaper in price and more attractive. When you would rather trade on your past glory than invest, you are slipping.
Thank God. Truely, thank God, for the person who feels that they have been blessed so much in their life that they can give a gift of a million dollars with no attention being drawn to themselves and so few rules about the giving. There are big hearts in Las Vegas during these difficult times. These stories are not being played out in every big city in America. This is almost unique to Las Vegas this year.
What exactly is ProPublica, and what is their mission in journalism?
This story looks to be clearly written to demonize the hospital and the entire healthcare system. I think the story has an obligation to present a fair portrayal of Mr. Carswell's physical condition, general health and medical history as part of this narrative. A 61 year old teacher in Houston is usually overweight, leads a sedentary lifestyle and possibly drinks and/or smokes. These are fair questions. They are fair in the context of being clear indicators that Mr. Carswell might have the appearance of not being very healthy and quite possibly "just died". Happens all the time. Sad to say, but it does.
Everytime I go to the hospital for some minor "proceedure" (and I'm over 50, so I go a lot), the check in process is overwhelmed by government required information forms and hospital "CYA" forms. It is the worst part of today's healthcare system, IMO. Especially since (as I have learned through discussion with many lawyers who are friends of mine) the forms aren't worth the paper they're written on. If someone isn't happy with some part of the process, then they can sue anyone at anytime. The only limit being the bankroll behind them.
The only emotions I take from this story are sadness that Mrs. Carswell has been so fixated on the cause of death that she has been tortured in her own mind for over 6 years and her pain has been forced upon her friends and family for all this time. And frustration that the purpose of this story is to make me worry about something else that isn't ever going to affect me, and my taxes and insurance premiuns are going to increase again as a result of all the "important" legislation resulting from this 1 in a million occurance.
Hsieh is making an impression in Las Vegas and the union wants to beat on him a bit because his workforce is not unionized, IMO. Does anyone know how much money Zappos employees make? The profiles I see on TV make it appear that everyone is between 18 and 40 years old, and they probably make $10 to 15 per hour. I would guess that Station Casinos pays much more than Zappos in wages and benefits.
Zappos appears to be a fun place to work, filled with the "happiness" that Hsieh is selling in his books. But does this look like a company that is prepared to provide a satisfying career for people all their adult lives (which are currently projected to be 50 years of working) and provide them with a comfortable retirement?
I admit I'm not real fashion savvy, but ive never heard of designer Bella McCartney. I have heard of Stella McCartney, Paul's daughter. Could this be who she is referring to?
Kinda disappointed there is only one picture with Kelly Monaco and Cheryl Burke. They are a couple of mega-hotties, IMO.
I don't understand all the hatred. The son of the most juiced-in, powerful person on a national basis has gotten a job representing the city at the legal level for a salary that appears to be competetive and he appears to be qualified for. The potential benefit for the city is millions of dollars in direct government spending and indirect investment based on their family relationship. That's how the real world works. That's why we go to the same restaurant on a regular basis, because the owner or bartender gives us 3 beers and only charges for one.
I can't imagine that job being too hard if the last person to have the job was blackout drunk at 3PM on a work day.
I wonder how many of the Justices dictated their decision on this matter from their desk with their legs propped up on the corner?
