While there are several issues that could be clarified in this editorial, the one about contractors not being less expensive deserves some comment. The CBO report focused on the very high end contractors (former military with years in the service, specialized diplomatic security training, background checks for secret clearances etc.) and compared them to average soldiers. Only a small fraction of security contractors are Americans, the vast majority are locals who are as useful as American soldiers at most security tasks - better in some cases because they have the language skills. We can contract about 30 local security contractors for the cost of every GI we support in Iraq. Care to look at the savings issue again?
