Wow....only two comments so far. I don't believe this is just a single security company problem. This is not just a issue where "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas" either. Fire Departments around the country have similar issues and are exploring possibilities to create similar policies. As a fire prevention person, I have a real issue with any policies that drastically change response to residential dwellings. This is very bad customer service and exposes these departments to a greater risk versus waisting tax-payer money rolling equipment to false alarms.
If you have a problem dwelling or dwellings with more than 3 false alarms, be pro-active and take the time to provide good customer service. Figure out why these alarms are false and address them without fines to your salary paying public or leaving them to feel at risk.
Fire alarm and detection is an early warning technoligy that saves lives if it's working and maintained properly. It allows occupants to eacape before sprinkler heads are even activated initiating the additional alarm verifications mentioned. Our purpose is to protect our public remember? We do this by being pro-active and promoting code compliant systems, educating our public on these systems, installation requirements and the importance of scheduled maintenance.
Are these systems truly code compliant fire systems.... probably not and the poor homeowners were sold security systems with a few smoke detectors on it. This is another part of the problem with false alarms. Before a department adopts such a drastic policy, develop solutions to lower the problem....that's fire prevention. This is also part of our responsibility to our public. Respond with a staff vehicle or engine non-emergency if necessary or develop other solutions first....wow!
