With high return comes high risk. 'Investing' with a hard money lender can be profitable, but there is a reason the borrowers are not using traditional lenders and paying a lower interest rate. We all lost money with the downturn in the market. Its not always someones fault.

Many of us in the private sector have had to pay more or downgrade our health insurance. Given the current economic times, the public sector workers should also face these same cost cutting steps.
