Congrats to a great kid. I was impressed with him when he appeared as the after game speaker in the Wranglers room over the weekend. I hope he continues to do well - perhaps he's the Wranglers 'feel good' story of the year, and if he continues to play well he may be our unsung hero of the year. Keep playing well Jimmy!!
The AHL rumors have been around for some time. In 2005 or 2006 when they first surfaced, it made sense. Edmonton had the AHL team in Edmonton (nice), and the housing bubble hadn't busted on the west coast. Edmonton has activitated their dormant AHL franchise for next season and will placing it in Oklahoma City. Albany is moving to Charlotte. The only AHL franchises I'm aware of that are in trouble - Lowell, and perhaps Springfield (where Edmonton currently houses their players) might fold or perhaps be located somewhere where the travel costs make it viable. I can't see them moving west with so few teams and the cost of travel in a tight economy. Maybe someday it might make sense, but not now. And when it might make sense, Abbortsford will be long gone.
LPN4LIFE: Perhaps we can sign some college kids since their season will be winding down soon. I believe thats how we got Miller back in 2008, and last year we had some solid signings that put some life into a pretty average squad. Let's hope we can do the same for 2010 - these college kids may not have pro experience but at least they'll bring some passion that at times is sadly lacking.
Johnstown? The Winnipeg of the ECHL. Ouch!
A lot of fans left after the second. Too bad - you missed an exciting comeback. How often do you see a team so transformed between periods? Also, I believe Idaho got too complacent, and with some bounces our way the flood gates were opened. Congrats to our guys for not calling it quits after 2 like some of the fans did!
I appreciated Bill Johnson's insight. Its too bad he does not chime in more often, but when he does its always very informative. It would also makes some of us diehards not as nervous about the status of the team.
One point I'm surprised Mr. Johnson did not mention, perhaps it somewhere between the lines, is how transient the Vegas market is, probably the most transient in the ECHL, even more than Florida where the Everblades play or some of the cities in California. This must drive the organization nuts. I personally know of 5 season ticket holders (10 tixs) that moved due to being transferred by their employer. And thats just within a few rows in my section.
Thanks again Billy for sharing your views. Please let us hear from you more often.
I like Moug's comments and how he handled it with the media. Coach said all that can be said, and I like that Coach indicated he expressed his concerns and wish him well.
The bottom line is that the ECHL, like all lower minor league circuts, is a stepping stone. I'm sure most players can be released from their contracts if a better opportunity comes up (a chance to move up or go to Europe). Any organization tha would hold a player back is noticed and that does not fare well when recruiting players for future years. If you are in the ECHL for more than two or three years, and you are not interested in being a player-coach, you need to be honest about your career.
The money in Europe is too good to pass up, and the hockey playing life for most players is limited to a few years in the lower minors. You must take the opportunity when it comes, and look out for #1.
Rushzone94: I'll try to find out for you, but I sure do miss the colorful uniforms we used to have..I hate the black and white ones. I know we wore the 'Vegas' ones for the preseason, but I can not remember the last time we had the red ones - maybe a year or two ago?
It was like 2005 again: old uniforms, Saturday night crowd of 6,000+.
BTW, Johner played with us in 2004-05, and briefly in 2005-06.
