A 250 megawatt CSP plant in Amargosa Valley will require 6 acre feet of water per megawatt. Most of the water rights are appropriated up there. (unless Harry Reid can get the feds to take the water rights) It will simply never happen which is a good thing. The ground water that would be wasted is vital to local agriculture and unique wetlands with endemic wildlife. The energy will need to be backed up by natural gas to make this economically feasible. This CSP plant will not be able to run at night all year. That will only be for limited days in the summer. That is hopeful thinking. The Sun reporters have a nice cushy view of what these projects should do, but don't really seem to understand the technology very well. Investing in such a boondoggle would be a true waste of money and your power bills will go way up. With all the rooftops in Vegas, open parking lots and other vacant space, a feed in tarif system of rooftop solar could produce far more energy, not raise our power bills to pay for the outdated technology of CSP solar. Power would also not have to be lost the long journey of costly powerlines. This would eliminate the need for Reid's recent eminent domain bill and it would actually be "green". There is an environmentally friendly way to use renewables and the way the Sun is getting behind.
CSP plants like this are actually backward thinking. www.basinandrangewatch.org
"Yet, energy developers still must contend with NIMBYism as residents may protest new power lines crisscrossing their communities. To push aside this long-standing problem, Reid has stepped up with another bill. Introduced last week, the legislation would give the federal government sweeping new authority to situate the power lines by exercising the power of eminent domain over private property, if necessary.
"
Can't believe the Las Vegas Sun is going to throw the word NIMBY at some people who don't want their land stolen through eminent domain. You actually think the post liberal new "green" trend is going to go anywhere if you call people who want to keep their property NIMBY's? Should we all just donate our life savings to T-Bone Pickens so the energy wasting lazy city people can feel better about their carbon footprint? I sure hope Harry Reid's home in Searchlight will have to be bulldozed for a powerline. Why do I get the feeling that Harry would strongarm the developers if that were the case?
Harry Reid and anybody who pushes eminent domain down the throats of Americans are fools. Energy can be developed on the roof tops and locally in cities. Reid, Pickens and Obama need to rethink thier un American, environment destroying "green" energy nonsense. This crap is anything but green and it uses eminent domain. It will also sky rocket your power bill. There are better ways. Write your senator and tell them to oppose Reid's eminent domain bill and do NOT vote for that nimrod in 2010!
Vegas really is a scumpit. Funny that people get offended by the truth!
How is giving federal money to a mob museum NOT a waste of money?
If McCain says it you hate it, if the democrats say it you love it? I seem to remember the same BS when you all were supporting the Invasion of Iraq in 2003. Just that the roles were reversed. People let the media decide how they should think. Don't fall for these political media tricks. They sure make Americans look pretty stupid.
A German company that wants to build a water wasting CSP plant in Amargosa Valley? Not enough water there. These require 6 acre feet per megawatt. It will never happen. You would be a bloody fool to invest in this nonsense. Go for rooftop panels. You can sell the energy back to the power company. Large boondoggles like this on public land will go bankrupt, waste water resources and make your power bills go sky high. These big solar plants are the biggest scam of 2009...
Digging up the desert and scraping away all the life for photovoltaic panels that could easily have neen placed on all the roof tops of Boulder City is hardly "environmentally friendly".
This is why Vegas is doomed. Developers want to restart the unsustainable mess of trying to maintain an economy that brings 6,000 new people per month to Vegas. That will never happen again. Hopefully Vegas will lose another 100,000 in the next couple of years...
With Reid having as much power as he does, a rail from Disneyland to Vegas may become a money wasting reality. It will destroy more of the landscape and will have to be propped up by the government(your taxes) like the Vegas monorail. Let's hope Reid does not get away with using tax dollars to reward his special interest contributers. I am seeing a lot of people let this political media love affair with the democracks distort thier ability to see that money wasting politicians are common with both crooked political parties. It's almost like we have had the same crooked government for the last three decades. People need to learn how to think for themselves. When a newspaper favors one political party, you are not getting the whole story...
Reid has proven himself to be a failure in both environmental protection and now standing up for the property rights of hard working Americans. If you can't depend on keeping your property in America, what can you depend on? The new administration is saying T-Boone Pickens is more important than the private property owner. I am no longer buying the Democrat's song and dance about standing up for the middle class. This article proves that is all BS. The poor and middle class will be the first to get their land stolen so the democrats can give all the wealth to T-Boone Pickes. You are disgusting, Senator Reid!
