Roof-top Solar PV is price competitive. Electricity generated using oil is expensive!
"For example, the average price paid per kWh by residential customers in March 2009, on Oahu was 19.0 cents, and on the Big Island was 30.7 cents. For Maui County the average price paid per kWh by residential customers in March 2009, on Maui was 24.0 cents, on Molokai was 32.4 cents, and on Lanai was 31.1 cents."

The plan matches Nevada's needs. Most of the routes are on existing right-of-ways including the designation of an existing route on the border of the Desert National Wildlife Refuge. Construction on any of these proposed routes will require a National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA) evaluation.
NVEnergy was recently authorized to construct a 500 MW natural gas plant. They have additional natural gas fueled generation capacity. We already have the means to firm-up several large wind generation projects. Even at today's natural gas price wind energy costs less than the cost of fuel for these natural gas plants. Solar reduces expensive peak load. A balanced portfolio of wind, solar, geothermal and the existing natural gas plants will supply all of our electricity at a cost less than that from the proposed coal plants.
Senator Obama has managed a successful campaign.

You ask -- "Could a 100-square-mile patch of Nevada really power the whole country?" NO!
Enough solar energy shines on a square 100 miles to a side to power the whole country.
10,000-square-miles not 100-square-miles.
