Hey, lmmfn, Junior Johnson as transportation secretary qualifies as a competent person in a position of authority? This is a goof (as was my response)! Do you really think the blogger was serious? Get a sense of humor.
Figures.
Why the hate, lmmfn? Don't be a hater!
I'm with Lenny. This old bag hasn't been relevant in years.
And Sarah Palin is the new First Lady of NASCAR!!!
You can call me Cary.
Good article and photo. Now here's the rest of the story: 4 of the 6 men pictured in the ad lived to AT LEAST 81 years of age (Stan the Man is still plugging along at 87). A fifth, Ewell Blackwell, lived to 74.
Only Bob Elliott died prematurely -- at the age of 49 of a ruptured vein in his neck. Whether it was caused by severe hacking from smoking Chesterfields isn't clear.
Why does there have to be parity in NASCAR? Racing always has been about the elite teams gaining an advantage over the other teams. Your suggestions sound an awful lot like the teachers who are coddling youngsters and producing a generation of wimps by refusing to keep score in schoolyard games so children won't be stigmatized by being a "loser."
Hey, if the also-ran teams don't like being at the back of the pack here's a suggestion: go out and work hard for a better sponsor so you can keep up with the frontrunners. Remember, Rick Hendrick and Richard Childress weren't ALWAYS top-tier teams. They worked their way to where they are now and no one gave them a handout.
But Kyle Busch won the race earlier this year and had no tire issues. You can't tell me HE was running a conservative setup.
