Rebels not getting necessary results this season on most important down
Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2014
It’s the most important down in football, according to many folks, and UNLV coach Bobby Hauck happens to be one of them. What a team accomplishes during third down on both sides of the ball often dictates who wins the game, and when you’re so bad during those plays on one side it might negate whatever you accomplish the other way.

Monday, Sept. 15, 2014

Rebels’ comeback comes up short in 48-34 loss to Northern Illinois
Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014
There’s plenty for UNLV and its followers to dwell on if they so choose after tonight’s 48-34 loss to Northern Illinois at Sam Boyd Stadium. Most would probably start with the Rebels’ third-down defense, which allowed the Huskies to convert on 15-of-19 attempts. That sustained many of their long, methodical scoring drives ...
Blog: Northern Illinois holds off UNLV’s rally in 48-34 victory
Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014
There was finally reason to believe, at least for a moment, that UNLV was going to be able to dig out of its 23-point hole. The Rebels stormed back and tied the game, fell back behind, and then got into position to tie the game again. But it wasn't enough.
Liberty makes just enough plays to win defensive struggle against Coronado
Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014
Momentum can be completely on your side until, suddenly, it’s not. It feels like a punch to the gut when it leaves and the hits feel more impactful with each pivot when teams trade blows like Liberty and Coronado on Friday night at Freedom Field.
Mojave jumps out to big lead and cruises to 50-6 win against Pahrump Valley
Friday, Sept. 12, 2014
When injuries are as big of an issue as they have been for Mojave High the past couple of weeks, just getting out of the game in good health can feel like a victory. The scoreboard showing your team up 50 to 6 at the final whistle doesn’t hurt, either.
Defense handles bulk of scoring in Sierra Vista’s shutout at Western
Friday, Sept. 12, 2014
Despite scoring more than 60 points tonight at Western High, Sierra Vista High’s offense actually watched a lot of the scoring from the sidelines. Sierra Vista played suffocating defense with four interceptions returned for touchdowns in a 64-0 victory.
Silverado keeps momentum moving forward in 45-14 win at Desert Oasis
Friday, Sept. 12, 2014
With a scoring drive to open the game followed by a three-and-out on defense, Silverado High got the exact start it was looking for. And once the Skyhawks got rolling there was no looking back in a 45-14 victory at Desert Oasis High.
Bern’s-Eye View: Mountain West Best Bets Week 3
Friday, Sept. 12, 2014
First the bad news: The Mountain West game I felt the best about last week, the one multiple people informed me they followed in part because of I liked it so much, lost. On the bright side, that’s the only game I missed.

UNLV sophomore kicker tackling multiple roles for the Rebels
Friday, Sept. 12, 2014
Once a ball is kicked off, the kicker’s job is often perceived to be done. The coverage team is tasked with tracking down the returner, and if that ball carrier breaks through to that last line of defense — the guy who gave him the ball in the first place — it’s usually a cringe-worthy moment ...
Good doing whatever he can for UNLV, as long as it doesn’t include acting his age
Thursday, Sept. 11, 2014

Northern Illinois brings impressive streaks into Saturday’s game at UNLV
The Huskies have won 25 straight regular-season games and 16 straight on the road, two trends the Rebels will try to bring to an end
Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2014
Bobby Hauck was trying to explain the sustained success of another program and couldn’t quite find the words. There’s nuance in individual games or even seasons, but when the UNLV coach tried to step back and look at the bigger picture of a program that’s been to a bowl game in eight of the last 10 years spanning three different coaching tenures, the most obvious answer felt the most appropriate.

Blog: UNLV flirts with disaster in 13-12 victory against Northern Colorado
Saturday, Sept. 6, 2014
They avoided the upset, which I guess is something, but there wasn't much to feel good about during UNLV's 13-12 victory tonight against Northern Colorado, one of the bottom tier teams in Division I-AA.
Plenty to build on from Canyon Springs’ 28-13 win against Cheyenne
Friday, Sept. 5, 2014
The scoreboard showed a dominant victory, though not a blowout. Add in all the points left on the field, though, and Canyon Springs High coach Hunkie Cooper was satisfied with his team’s 2014 debut.
Sloppy performance still good enough for Liberty in 58-26 victory
Friday, Sept. 5, 2014
Special teams is usually the most overlooked aspect of football, at least as it compares to offense and defense, and it’s that area that will get the most attention at Liberty High practices this week. Well, that and the team’s overall discipline.

Spring Valley tosses shutout to take Banner Game against Bonanza
Friday, Sept. 5, 2014
Following a 19-6 loss to Moapa Valley High last week, Spring Valley High coach Marcus Teal was looking for more balance and consistency from his defense. It’s fair to say he got that in the team’s home opener.
Bern’s-Eye View: Mountain West Best Bets Week 2
Friday, Sept. 5, 2014
While 5-6 isn’t exactly what I was looking for in the debut of this column, it wasn’t terrible so I’ll take it. This week we drop most of the Division I-AA opponents so things should be a little more clear.

Friday, Sept. 5, 2014
For first-year Legacy High coach John Isola, the move from assistant to the top guy has been rather smooth away from the field.

Durango focused on moving past winless season
Friday, Sept. 5, 2014
The 2013 season is one Durango High would like to move past as quickly as possible. This entire offseason, the Trailblazers have been looking forward, motivated by the 0-9 record that probably feels more like a bad dream than reality.

Canyon Springs hopes to learn from close losses heading into 2014 season
Friday, Sept. 5, 2014

Defense must be focus for Rebels to turn page from drubbing at Arizona
UNLV (0-1) has great chance to bounce back from 58-13 loss with home opener Saturday night against Northern Colorado
Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2014
When the Rebels looked back at it, the tape held basically the same information viewers could take away from Friday’s ESPN broadcast at Arizona Stadium. The Wildcats’ path to most of their points included one-on-one situations that they won. Repeat that several times and you get the 58-13 boondoggle that has UNLV at 0-1 for the fifth straight year.
Arizona knocks Rebels around the field for second straight season
Saturday, Aug. 30, 2014
Once you start it’s easy to get lost in the numbers — 2, 4, 787 — because they’re all staggering in their own way. They also tell the story of Arizona’s shellacking against UNLV ...

Bishop Gorman grad Anu Solomon set a freshman record with 425 passing yards for the Wildcats and the team finished with a school record 787 yards in a 58-13 beatdown against UNLV that matched last year's score.
Bonanza High confident its cohesion will make up for key departures
Friday, Aug. 29, 2014
Bonanza High coach Kevin Volcic readily admits that on paper his 2014 roster doesn’t look as good as last year’s version. Yet at no point does he think that’s going to mean a step backward this season.
Bern’s-Eye View: Mountain West Best Bets Week 1
As the 2014 season begins, we start a new feature picking every league game against the spread
Thursday, Aug. 28, 2014
The 2014 Mountain West slate kicks off with a bang tonight on ESPN as Boise State begins the post-Chris Petersen era with a neutral-site game against No. 18 Ole Miss. In what will hopefully be a very profitable new venture I’m going to pick every Mountain West game this season, keeping track of ...

These top upsets in UNLV football history prove anything possible in opener at Arizona
Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2014
The Rebels have an uphill climb in Friday’s season opener at Arizona. UNLV is a 24-point underdog at most sports books in town. It’s a big number, one that would make an outright victory a legitimate shock to most outsiders. But it’s not like the Rebels haven’t ...
New quarterback takes the reins as Rebels prepare for 2014 season opener
Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2014
Blake Decker might not have known he would be UNLV’s starting quarterback when he transferred into the program this offseason, but it wouldn’t be a stretch to say he expected himself to be in this position entering Friday’s season opener at Arizona. “That was the hope ...

Longtime teammates lead defensive charge in UNLV scrimmage
Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014
They’ve played together, and played well together, for so long that it only made sense for Blake Richmond and Najee Johnson to continue playing alongside each other. “We both felt that it would be good for us to continue the high school and junior college chemistry we have together,” Johnson said at Saturday’s scrimmage at Broadbent Park. From Rodriguez High in Fairfield, Calif., to...
