Small fire extinguished at Hard Rock Hotel: Sunday, Sept. 13, 2009; A small fire broke out Sunday afternoon at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. The fire was found after smoke was discovered at 3:52 p.m. coming through a wall, the Clark County Fire Department said.

Community, police come together for National Night Out: Event gives neighbors and police officers a chance to get to know each other; Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009; Communities across the Las Vegas Valley came together Tuesday to celebrate the 26th Annual National Night Out. National Night Out is a crime- and drug-prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch. The event, which began in 1984, is designed to bring neighbors together, heighten awareness about crime and drug activity and strengthen neighborhood and police relations.

As fireworks booths get busy, fire officials stress safety: Wednesday, July 1, 2009; Fourth of July preparations have already begun for local firefighters in charge of inspecting fireworks distributors to make sure vendors are complying with county regulations. There are about 200 curbside firework-distributing stations throughout Clark County, selling products from three different companies: TNT Fireworks, Phantom Fireworks and Discount Fireworks. The stands are run by local nonprofits.
Controlled crashes a 'hands-on lab' for investigators: Speedway event lets officials witness car collisions first-hand; Monday, June 1, 2009; Regular visitors to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway are used to seeing the occasional car crash. The speedway didn't host a race Monday morning, but there were still plenty of collisions. The eighth annual Crash Conference gave attendees the opportunity to witness eight controlled crashes simulating real-life situations, such as one car being T-boned by another vehicle or careening into a tractor-trailer at 35 mph. North Las Vegas police officer Jim Byrne, the lead investigator for the crash investigation team, said the conference helps police officers and others reconstruct crashes in a controlled setting.

Volunteers worked two shifts, at 2 a.m. and 6 a.m., and consisted of everyone from UNLV students to those who once were homeless but have left the streets. Guides who once were homeless helped volunteers find locations where people most likely would be staying. The last census in 2007 found more than 11,000 people living on the streets of Las Vegas.
