Rob Miech's Take: The X-factor of the squad. He hasn't been completely healthy since high school, but the surgically repaired right knee withstood his tests during the preseason. He pressed it and dunked and hit the boards in traffic, and the knee passed. He has some scoop shots, twists and turnarounds that will shake many foes.
Miech's Question: Will he attack from the outset or mostly try to defer to others, especially when his jumper isn't falling?
UNLV CAREER: Jasper begins his second season in the Runnin' Rebel program in 2009-10 ... transferred to UNLV from Kentucky after the 2007-08 season ... sat out the 2008-09 season as a redshirt because of NCAA transfer rules ... is eligible to play as a junior ... named the 2009-10 Preseason Mountain West Conference Newcomer of the Year.
JUNIOR - REDSHIRT (2008-09): Used the 2008-09 season as a redshirt year after transferring to UNLV from Kentucky.
KENTUCKY: As a true freshman in 2006-07, played in 34 games and started the final 27 ... the Wildcats won their first 11 games with him as a starter ... was second on the team and third among SEC freshmen with 2.9 assists per game ... shot .613 from the field ... underwent microfracture knee surgery before the 2007-08 season ... as a sophomore, missed 11 games (10 during knee rehabilitation) ... shot .457 from 3-point range and averaged 5.5 rebounds per game ... scored a career-high 14 points against Florida at the end of the 2007-08 season.
HIGH SCHOOL: A 2006 graduate of Paso Robles (Calif.) High School ... was MVP of the adidas Super 64 in Las Vegas ... an all-league player for three years, including being PAC 5 MVP twice and all-county for three years ... named county player of the year two years in a row ... was the Bearcat Athletic Foundation Outstanding Achievement Award winner ... averaged 21.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 7.0 assists per game ... coached by Scott Larson.
PERSONAL: Derrick Lamar Jasper was born April 13, 1988, in San Leandro, Calif. ... the son of Sue and Shelba Jasper ... majoring in university studies ... has a brother, Tony (34) and a sister, Jasmine (21).
