LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Obama’s associations prove he’s unworthy

Mon, Jul 21, 2008 (2:02 a.m.)

What are we Americans thinking to even consider Barack Obama for president with his terrible choice of pastors and mentors? Is this the best the Democrats can put up to represent the good ole USA? I’m appalled!

I have voted both Democratic and Republican over many years and this is the worst we have ever had to choose from. John McCain is not the best Republican either. I would have preferred Mitt Romney or Newt Gingrich — but Obama?

What are we Americans thinking? I am ashamed that we would even consider this person of questionable ethics and certainly terrible choices, such as the Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr. and others of his ilk.

Please, Americans, come to your senses. Do not put Obama in our White House. This is how low we as Americans have allowed ourselves to fall. God bless the USA.

  1. What exactly do you mean by "and others of his ilk?"

  2. She implies she is a bigot without the courage to just say so. That she would have preferred Mitt Romney just says what a completely ignorant person she is.

  3. Mitt & Newt? That would have placed 500 steps lower than Obama - another brain-washed Republican.

  4. Pathetic. If you want to discuss religion and politics why not also bring up McCain’s endorsements by Rev. Dobson, Rev. Rod Parsley, and Rev. Hagee.

Is it possible that you are one of the “working class white voters .. a Reagan Democrat” who is ethnically biased and using the religious pretext is your way to deal with your own intolerance?

  5. We have an opportunity this year to vote for someone whose quality I have not seen until now in my lifetime in a presidential election: very intelligent, with real public service in mind, with long-range vision, with much personal integrity, from a non-privileged background, enormously hard-working, with grace, and with respect for others - even those on different political wavelengths - that should help him build coalitions to accomplish some of the vast work that this country so desperately needs.

Unfortunately, there are those who will not vote for him because he is part African, and they are afraid of that. Which means that it's imperative that his supporters get out to vote, help with the drive to get people to the polls, etc.

Ms. Schwenig, there are plenty of associations by other politicians with people whom you would no doubt consider unsavory, if you knew more about them. I'm not a Wright fan, but he's not going to be on the November ballot. Obama did not sit through every Wright sermon. It's a wonder he made it to church at all with the amount of work he has to do. When some of Wright's more outrageous statements came to light - the AIDS conspiracy, for example - Obama quit the church. What more do you want? And some of what Wright said was on target: this country's government has left massive numbers of poor Americans to drown. Obviously you're not one, or you wouldn't feel so hostile about that. Now we have the chance to vote for someone who cares about our whole country, not just his rich cronies and CEO's. I'll be in the voting booth with bells on, with champagne chilling in the fridge.

If Obama is elected, the U.S. will recover some of the respect by the rest of the world that has been flooding away for years now. Please try to think beyond one issue.

  6. p.s. Ms. Schwenig, I'm assuming you didn't hear the news about McCain calling his wife a c&(% in front of a few reporters. Google it. And maybe you missed the recent coverage of Gramm calling average Americans who are truly hurting "whiners"? And do you know much about the three religious leaders mentioned by a previous comment writer?

  7. Teacher, I'm sure you're no fan of McCain's rape jokes:

    http://www.politico.com/news/stories/070...

When coupled with his recent joke during his visit to UNLV when he told the reporter that he had stopped beating his wife last week, it shows a glaring undercurrent of misogyny that all women should fear.

Even worse is that this type of "humor" is dismissed by McCain's surrogates as being evidence of his "authenticity."

    It's true, he's authentically disgusting.

  8. According to you Obama lovers, he is the best thing in the world.

To get him elected, you are hiding his leftist beliefs.

By doing so, he will not have that much of a mandate if elected. So if you want your dream world of a leftist activist government then you should be shouting on the roof top what you want to do.

He has the most liberal voting record in the US Senate.

When he ran for state senate, he stated in a questionnaire with his handwriting on it many leftist beliefs, including a nationwide ban on hand guns.

He has never compromise his leftist beliefs and never tried to pass major bills by joining with Republicans.

He brags about kicking people off of welfare, even though he stated that he was against the Clinton agenda to do so.

He even voted for FISA. According to many on the left, that is an impeachable offense. I think that is the only good thing he has ever done.

He plans to raise taxes on everybody making more than $35,000 a year. He is proposing to radically raise taxes on those making more $80,000 a year.

His health care plan would slam small businesses with new health care taxes.

He wants to get rid of nuclear weapons and cross-his-fingers that the rest of the world will do so too.

He is against new oil drilling and has even said that he likes high gas prices.

He wants to fight terrorist by making every solider in the armed forces a police officer and a Crime Scene Investigator.

  9. Wow, way to directly contradict yourself there, genius.

"He has never compromise his leftist beliefs and never tried to pass major bills by joining with Republicans."

    Two lines later:

"He even voted for FISA. According to many on the left, that is an impeachable offense. I think that is the only good thing he has ever done."

    LOL!

  10. Thanks again my biggest fan.

    You are right.

Obama has compromised his leftist beliefs.

He is still your hero for voting for FISA.

  11. p.p.s. Ms. Schwenig,
Here's another for you to look at: http://www.latimes.com/news/politics/la-...

This story is about how McCain's divorce damaged his friendship with the Reagans. Here's a quote from the story:

"McCain, who is about to become the GOP nominee, has made several statements about how he divorced Carol and married Hensley that conflict with the public record."

In other words, he tells stories about how he treated his ex.

He divorced his wife to marry a younger (probably blonder) heiress - whom he apparently doesn't treat with the greatest respect.

This is who you'd vote for over Mr. Obama?

  12. Mr. Nance,

Either that or Obama is not the leftist you portray him to be. Go to his web site and read his positions on the issues.

As for his mentors, I certainly have no reservations about all those professors at Harvard and Columbia.

Compare the way the two candidates have conducted their personal lives. It's no contest. Obama is far the superior gentleman.

  13. Nance is all hyperbole and hysteria today. If you like his style of comedy, please check out his comments on this page, where his previous comments come back to bite him:

    http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2008/jul...

  14. "... Obama is not the leftist you portray him to be."

Then after he is elected, if he is elected, then he will have no mandate to do leftist things.

His mandate will be to work with republicans and create middle of the road compromise plans.

  15. Slavery, Jim Crow, I think it is totally appropriate that someone of Rev. Wright’s era be suspicious of the government. Slavery and Jim Crow too far in the past for you, think their legacies have been righted? How about a miscarriage of social justice that had likely taken place in your, as well as in Rev. Wight’s lifetime: The Tuskegee Study that deliberately left black men infected with syphilis unknowing and untreated for 41 years (1932-1973) long after an effective cure was available. So what are you afraid of the message or the messenger? More info about the Tuskegee Study at: http://www.cdc.gov/tuskegee/timeline.htm...

  16. It doesn't matter what anyone thinks! Obama has already been crowned as the new president by the media and the French. It's over, It's a forgone conclusion. Obama walks on water. He turns water to wine. He knows Everything there is to know about everything there is! I just hope we get to keep him for a while before he is elected to be God. Anyone who disagrees with this is a rotten racist bigot.

  17. "Obama has already been crowned as the new president by the media and the French."

The French? Seriously? Why are the loony Neocons always so concerned with the French?

I know, after eight long years of wandering, dazed, through the vacuum of leadership under Bush, it's easy for the Neocons to be confused by a someone who inspires people. When faced with a natural leader who has shown resolve and judgment, they get disoriented and bewildered and start mumbling about the French.

    Give me a break.

  18. GO GO GO OBAMA! all this will never end, will it? there are bitter Clintonites and angry McCainites! CHANGE is what is not the same Republican (shudder) garbage we've had for eight years. Senator Obama is the answer and there is absolutely no question after that
ps: I am a 44yo, straight SWF: support right to choose and right to die and Gay rights; raise money for the homeless, for victims of domestic and sexual violence, for the homeless, and for AIDS research. to think of voting for a man who calls his wife the C word and a trollup (and that's only the public names) is UNTHINKABLE to me! how liberal am I?

  19. J's an idiot. He does his best to lie about Obama... "He'll raise your taxes!!! Don't like China's one child rule? Get used to it if you elect Obama!!! He's gonna take your handgun!!! Think health care is bad? Obama's gonna make you preform surgery on yourself!!!"

Really, it's a tired, but comical game.

What J also doesn't realize is that calling him a liberal isn't an insult. There are tons of us out here (Ghandi, Jesus, MLK, FDR, etc.) and we've been right on every major issue to date (voting rights, civil rights, religious rights, free speech, etc.)

I can see how you'd be bitter being wrong all the time...

I'm also really glad someone brought up the French. I think renewed calls for Freedom Fries are certainly in order with this Obama debacle.

    Dope...

  20. To jfnance:

Some of us (MANY of us) like Obama BECAUSE OF what you call his "leftist beliefs". Unfortunately, you and the rest of the "republicans" have moved so far to the right you cannot see that the majority of Obama's positions are DEAD SMACK IN THE CENTER.

We have the "liberal media" to thank for that horrifying shift.

  21. So what are the beliefs you like about Obama so much?

Is it his support of FISA?

Is it his new found love for the right of individuals to own guns?

Is it his goal to make war in Afghanistan?

  22. How about, "it's as simple as 'HE'S NOT MCCAIN'"?

    Good enough for you?

I have to ask ... "make war in Afghanistan"? What have we been doing there the past seven years or so??? LOL.

BTW, please define "leftist beliefs" and cite examples (with supporting documention, of course).

Oh one other thing ... and this just cracks me up about the right wing wackos (but I repeat myself) ... every actual Liberal I know not only owns a gun ... they know how to use them. LOL.

  23. Why indeed?
