NewsONE anchor Jeff Gillan got time with John Edwards today. Here are some snippets of the interview that will air tonight:
re the economic stimulus package:
I think we need a stimulus, the economy's really slowed down. I think we need to get more help to more people. There are about 50 million people who are left out by the president's plan. It also doesn't provide any long-term benefit. The benefits are short term so what I would do instead is invest in green infrastructure, which is enormously important in Nevada which has so much opportunity in that area. I mean what we can do is create a million new jobs including a lot of new jobs in Nevada and those jobs are important for the economy of Nevada but also important in helping stimulate the economy nationwide. We gotta deal with this mortgage foreclosure crisis 16.42.30 which is a huge issue in Nevada and I've proposed a very aggressive to help families that are in danger of losing their homes.
stimulus will give 800 - 1600. Is that enough, should there be more:
I think there are more things that are effective. I talked about creating jobs by investing in green infrastructure, helping with this mortgage problem. You also gotta get help to the states. Many of our states budgets are in bad shape 16.43.02 and if we get help to them that keeps the money in the economy. We gotta expand unemployment insurance and modernize it so that it covers more people because when the unemployment rate's up, we need to be sure that people can still support themselves and they're continuing to spend money and invest in the economy 16.43.20 all of this is aimed at the same thing though -- which is to get this economy jump-started
How do you reform the mortgage industry:
The most important thing is that we have to create restructuring and refinancing options for all those Americans who are at risk of losing their home. If you see what's happening in Nevada I mean so many families who have come to Nevada who have worked hard have been chasing the promise of America -- the American dream -- and have -- the biggest single asset they have is their home and now they're at risk of losing it. And what we have to do is be there as a nation for those families to allow them to get out of the ditch that they're in and be able to move forward and families be able to hold on to the most important asset that they have.
At large ruling | critique of Obama supporters
I don't know enough about the details of the lawsuit. My position about this all along has been as many people as possible should be able to participate in the caucuses I do have to say I was very troubled after we sat on a stage Senator Obama Senator Clinton and I just a few nights ago in Las Vegas and debated and Senator Obama made a pledge that he wasn't going to engage in any of these divisive politics and it was wrong -- to see that there are supporters of Sen. Obama that are running a very negative ad a radio ad against senator Clinton. I just think that this is not what we need. It's not good for our party and it's not good for the future of the country and what I want to do is get above that kind of politics and actually focus on what we need to do for the people of America not fights and squabbles between politicians.
RJ poll puts you in third
Can you win Nevada?
When I look at all the polls they say it's very close in Nevada. I think it'll be a close contest there tomorrow. And what I'm doing is I'm saying to every caucus goer specifically to union caucus goers, no one has been a stronger fighter for your right to organize and collectively bargain than I am. I've been in the backs of restaurants and hotels for years now helping with this effort working families, middle class families. This fight for the middle class -- I am the only candidate among the three that's never taken any more from a Washington lobbyist or special interest PAC. I actually feel very good about how we're going to do because I think caucus goers are going to recognize that I'm their champion. I'm the champion of working people and the middle class

Finally this man gets some basket balls. In New Hampshire Debate which I watched live and then several more times online, Sen. Edward was taking Obama's side like a little brother in front of mama. He has said many things to actually give Obama his masculine power. This is the first time that the Senator has made a stand outside Obama's shadow. In Iowa, Obama found that he was not alone' in New Hampshire; Clinton found her heart; in Nevada, Edwards is finding Courage.
John Edwards, the Ralph Nader of 2008.
Hope you made a good deal with the Clintons Johnny.
John edwards is all about change...changing his mind that is!
John Edwards is the candidate who voted for the Patriot Act, but campaigns against it.
Voted for No Child Left Behind, but campaigns against it.
Voted for the China trade deal, but campaigns against it.
Voted for the Iraq war … and campaigns against it..
Voted for the Nafta … and campaigns against it..
did this guy get anything right in his short stink in the senate?
He also campaigns for the average working man as he goes home to his 28,000 square foot house in North Carolina!
I cant believe anything this guy says....
I guess the deal with Obama was not that great!
Hillary
Edwards
Barack Hussein Obama
Kick that dorks arse Edwards!
Go Hillary/Edwards!
Allow me to provide some light on a lot of misunderstanding here:
One, Senator Obama championed an extremely successful health care plan for Illinois children - All Kids http://www.allkids.com/, created with Rod R. Blagojevich(IL Gov.)is literally a model for a workable, affordable national health care plan. All children qualify, $40 per child for full coverage health insurance? How many of you making around $45,000 a year pay such a low premium. What health care program has Hillary created. She stated during the Nevada debate that she helped pass the CHIP, Children's Health Insurance Program, the federal program that covers millions of children in the US. She completely mislead the audience. Senator Orrin G. Hatch, a conservative Republican, along with Senator Edward M. Kennedy, Democrat, wrote the monumental health care bill in 1997. Hillary boasted bravely of her achievement that night, but she was not in office in 1997, she was the first lady at the time, and was wrapped up in the Monica Lewinsky affair.
Two, Barack Obama has had a fantastic career, even before his political office. He was an Illinois Senator from 1996 to 2004. As a state legislator, Obama gained bipartisan support for legislation reforming ethics and health care laws.[33] He sponsored a law enhancing tax credits for low-income workers, negotiated welfare reform, and promoted increased subsidies for child care.[34] Obama also led the passage of legislation mandating videotaping of homicide interrogations, and a law to monitor racial profiling by requiring police to record the race of drivers they stopped.[34] The law was at first very controversial, but due to Obama's skills as a negotiator and bipartisanships, he won the support of the police. During his 2004 general election campaign for U.S. Senate, he won the endorsement of the Illinois Fraternal Order of Police, whose president credited Obama for his active engagement with police organizations in enacting death penalty reforms.-Wikipedia.
Time Magazine wrote an excellent article on Obama's political achievements - http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/...
I'm fairly shocked at the misinformation of this election cycle. I wish I could remain unbiased. But Obama's dedication to service, his consistency to fight on behalf of the interest of the American people cannot be ignored. A presidency under him would indeed be a win for the common man, and undoubtely would be a new era in Washington politics.
I'm afraid that under the Clinton's - If her current smear and suppress tactics are any indication - it would simply be more of the same Washington politics. I am voting for Obama because I beleive we do need a new direction for our country, and Obama is exactly the man that can do that.
We have Clinton, a very powerful female candidate. We have Obama, a great speaker who is able to draw in the young voters. Then we Edwards, a champion for the middle class. A candidate ready to fight for us. The orginal "Change" candidate, the second peoples president next to FDR. There has NEVER been a time that we needed a candidate like JRE for our country for our very livlihood. It is time for Nevadaians to show the country what "YOU" are witnessing in your very own state. It is time for Americas' "wake up call" to what is going on! It is JRE who has and will continue to shake the foundations of the greedy corporations leaving the American workers behind. Action is on the way....Caucas for JRE, The next Peoples president!
Edwards has gone out on a limb and talks nonstop about the interests of the people of the US who are suffering mightily under GW Bush. Hillary and Obama sort of tapdance around that problem and talk in platitudes. I am going with the trial lawyer who has made his number one issue the well-being of the people who are suffering, namely the rapidly shrinking middle class and I will hold him to his word. The nation needs a candidate who gets the huge problem of economic disparity. John Edwards does. The other two only get the art of the catfight. John Edwards 2008.
Note to Dems: support someone who can actually WIN the White House.
Let's put Republican politics into play: as Republicans they can't have Edwards nominated - he gives them virtually nothing to shoot at, and as the Nominee he can help Democrats in other states, especially Red ones, win Congressional seats to win a MANDATE as he goes to the White House.
If Obama wins the Nomination Repubs will crucify him on lack of experience, his questionable annointment to the Senate in Illinois (for those who don't know, the original Repub opponent Jack Ryan conveniently left the race rather than face criminal charges from his ex-wife on child endangerment - and the Repubs imported carpetbagger Alan Keyes - of Washington DC fame -to run against Obama) and realistically we should be asking ourselves, as Democrats, how a guy who has been in the Senate for less than 3 years, made dozens of trips outside the US during that time (look him up in Wikipedia)did anything of substance in Washington. His run for President is mid-term, just like his run for US Senate was, so he can't legitimately claim he served his entire term. Dems cried in 2000 about George Bush's lack of Washington experience - look in the mirror here folks, - the Repubs are.
If Hillary gets the nomination, we carry no more Red states in 2008 than we did in 2004, including Nevada. TIME.com did an article on her yesterday (source at end of this note) ending in "For all the good news this poll delivers to Hillary — her strong favorability rating (53% ) and her lead in the field — it seems a grim portent for her chances in a general election." Hillary brings out more repubs to November's election than either Obama or Edwards, especially in Nevada, since repubs are expected to have a lower turnout at Caucus.
As a Dem I hope my fellow Nevadans show keen political awareness and Edwards wins here. It's all about winning the White House and doing it in big numbers in November. Neither Hillary or Obama's coattails are long enough or strong enough to keep a Democratic congress in place.
Time.com Source: http://www.time.com/time/magazine/articl...
Barack Obama gave up multi-million dollar opportunities in law firms to be a civil rights attorney. Barack is worth a modest 450,000 to 1.1 million. Edwards and Hillary are worth about 29.5 million and 50 million, but they claim to understand the average worker.
http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/05/17/c...
stanjz....if you want to repeat that silly talking point by Obama campaign go ahead. Except he didn't have a job that made that. He decided instead to make a career out of politics.
John Edwards DID have a jobs that made millions and could have made more, but decided to go in to public life to better peoples lives, after the loss of his son.
That's REAL, not fantasy land.
John Edwards, keeping the promise to America
You show them what they have been shielded from by this Corporate media pushing him.
THE most egregious hypocrisy. AND, this is after he complained about unions supporting John Edwards in Iowa, calling them "special interests who have too much influence in DC".....How do you like that Union members. He blasted union members as special interests, like his Corporate Donors and attacked John Edwards for his heavy Union support.
This man is such a fraud, it's scary if people don't notice this before it's too late.
And, speaking of hyprocrisy. You all know that speech Obama gave in Reno the other day, where he tried to paint Reagan, the Republican that started trick down economics and the start of NeoCons agenda, as some sort of good guy that he wanted to be compared to?
John Edwards responded perfectly!
Obama:I don't want to present myself as some sort of singular figure. I think part of what's different are the times. I do think that for example the 1980 was different. I think Ronald Reagan changed the trajectory of America in a way that Richard Nixon did not and in a way that Bill Clinton did not. He put us on a fundamentally different path because the country was ready for it. I think they felt like with all the excesses of the 1960s and 1970s and government had grown and grown but there wasn't much sense of accountability in terms of how it was operating. I think people, he just tapped into what people were already feeling, which was we want clarity we want optimism, we want a return to that sense of dynamism and entrepreneurship that had been missing."
Edwards:When you think about what Ronald Reagan did to the American people, to the middle class to the working people".
"He was openly - openly - intolerant of unions and the right to organize. He openly fought against the union and the organized labor movement in this country. He openly did extraordinary damage to the middle class and working people, created a tax structure that favored the very wealthiest Americans and caused the middle class and working people to struggle every single day. The destruction of the environment, you know, eliminating regulation of companies that were polluting and doing extraordinary damage to the environment."
"I can promise you this: this president will never use Ronald Reagan as an example for change.
OBAMA '08!
What I regret about these recent weeks of dirty politics, is that Barack Obama, through no fault of his own, has been painted, in lurid colors, by the Clinton's(cause let's face it, Bill is running with Hillary this time:)) into a person he is really not. It's obvious that many people didn't know about Obama before this election heated up.
I'm not trying to sway anyone's vote, because we are all going to vote according to our own reason. All these heated exchanges and bare naked attempts to appeal to each other's emotions for the benefit of our chosen candidate is not likely to change our minds. But with that said, and no matter if Hillary winds up destroying Barack, or if magically people wind up supporting him in wild numbers again, Barack Obama has honestly led a remarkable political life, and has largely worked toward helping the poor, fighting corporate power, and working to improve health care.
Now, you may be skeptical of that, given all the press coverage and rumors that have been floating around, but it really is true. Read Time Magazines article - http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/...
Time's article is clear and concise, but if you'd rather read just a listing of facts on Obama, read the Wikipedia Encyclopedia entry on him: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barack_Obam... - wikepdia is sited and sourced, so any claim you can follow the link to the source and judge for yourself.
Barack has lived a fairly noble life, as far as politicians go. So I just don't think it's fair the way the media, and the Clinton's are trying destroy his image. he's lead a good life, and honestly believes in the idea that our government would better if we'd minimize bipartisanship polarization. He's one of our better politicians, and even if he doesn't win, he's still going to keep fighting for the common good.
By Gamblndan
Must be nice...you wanna' share what you're taking?
Edwards did not support NAFTA as you claim.
OBAMA did....as a matter of fact, he spelled it out "I support Free Trade and I support adding Peru to the Free Trade Agreement".
And if you thinks it's so bad that Edwards voted for the first Patriot Act, maybe you might think it pretty bad that Obama...who campaigned in 2004 against the war and the Patriot act......ACTUALLY HAD THE NERVE TO VOTE FOR THE PATRIOT ACT 2....major huevos....
Oh and the war??...yep, after getting in the Senate in 2005, he spent the next 2 years before announcing his presidency voting for every funding bill...and acutally voted AGAINST the one Bill brought to the floor in June 2006 to end the war.
Now, Obama wasn't in the senate when No Child Left Behind came for a vote, just like he didn't hafe a vote on the War, but something tells me according to his record, he SURE WOULD HAVE VOTED FOR IT.
Now, lets see...Oh, his lie about not supporting Nuclear Plants until we find a way to store waste. He VOTED FOR CHENEY's ENERGY BILL for Nuclear Plants and Oil give aways in 2005.
Coal....he pushed a Lobbyist backed Liquified Coal Bill....TWICE til it failed again in June 2007...this is tax dollars he wanted to use AND it would have added so much pollutions to Global Warming, it would have been like replacing every car with a Hummer.
Keep the American Promise. John Edwards for America and stop this Corporate Cronyism!!!
By Gamblndan
And, what does his home have anything to do with the work he will be doing. He paid for it with his hard working money and he built a Green Energy efficient home.
Much better than the dirty deal Obama has been dabbling in for years that recently resulted in his new home next to door to his friend/backer/money bundler Rezko, who has been indicted for many illegal activities...particularly in Real Estate.
John Edwards has never taken money from Lobbyists or PACS, where as Obama only copied him for this campaign...but still Obama's claim doesn't equal with the 76K he received from Lobbyists through the 3rd quarter of this fundraising cycles.
John Edwards will fight and move our country forward for working Americans. He is not indebted to his Corporate Donors as Obama and Clinton have been and showed by their votes.
This is the opportunity America has been asking for. Not to coronate the front runners, to choose the Peoples candidate.
John Edwards, Real Change on Real Issues for America.
Global Warming
Iraq
Health Care (for ALL)
Jobs / Poverty
And if you really want to see John Edwards excellent record when he was in the Senate 1998-2004

Clinton/Edwards 08!
The Obamists just can't stand facts getting in the way of the myth they have created of Obama.
Obama does NOT have the experience to run this country. He will also leave 15 million americans without health insurance. He is NOT enough change!!!!! Caucus for Edwards!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, it's true that Edwards is wealthy and lives in a grand house. I don't see why that is an issue. He came by his money the hard way...he earned it. His attended public elementary, high school, and college. Edwards credits the excellence of his teachers for much of his academic success. He worked very hard of behalf of his clients and was successful in his efforts. Good for him! We should all be thankful that, instead of living the good life, he feels indebted to this country for making his success possible. He wants to provide the tools -- sound economy, excellent public education, health care -- to help each of us provide our children with the same opportunities he had. He is the real deal.
There's excellent coverage of the US prez campaign on The Guardian, a progressive but fair Brit newspaper, the largest in England. Here's an excellent, unbiased and insightful column today:
http://commentisfree.guardian.co.uk/rich...
They really have a good objective and historical perspective since they're not emotionally involved.
Important is that they compare this primary to the Democrats close primary in 1984- Walter Mondale, former VP and Gary Hart, a progressive Senator from Colorado. Hart was a young new honest face and won many states but Mondale pulled out the nomination (on the basis of experience and party ties). Mondale lost 49 out of 50 states, the worst Democratic defeat in history.
There's also another article on Mayor Bloomberg that makes clear that he's waiting to see if either Obama is nominated by the Democrats or McCain by the Republicans. If neither is then he's definitely in and will spend at least $1 Billion of his $20 Billion to guarantee that he gets elected. ( By comparison Ross Perot spent $35 million, chump change even then.)
Emotions aside, it's a safe bet the next president will be Obama, McCain, or Bloomberg.
What again, Gamblndan?
Do you just post and run in every article in this paper?
for the third time....
EDWARDS COULDN'T VOTE FOR NAFTA.
HE WASN'T IN THE SENATE AT THE TIME!
And there was no "China trade deal" as you note. It was to allow China to join the World Trade Organization. The first step to putting some controls & regulations on their markets. Of course, Bush isn't interested in enforcing any labor or environmental issues, but President Edwards certainly will.
jeezzz...
Obama has more government experience than Hillary Diane.. I know it hurts you guys so bad to admit it.
Come on, denial is the first step. Obama is going to make a great President.
Hillary can stay in the Senate. (Or, I dunno, they could vote her out. That'd be nice, too.)
GO OBAMA!!!
Hey Hey! Ho Ho!
Obama's Got to Go!
Hey Hey! Ho Ho!
Obama's Got to Go!
Hey Hey! Ho Ho!
Obama's Got to Go!
Hillary All the Way!!!
Obama loves Reagan the anti-union racist.
