President Obama siad nothing wrong or negative about Las Vegas; he had every right to say what he said. If Mayor Goodman was offended, tough. He should be the one apologizing to Las Vegas for sponsoring a free Vegas trip for an entire town in Texas on OUR tax dime. Mayor Goodman needs to resign instead of trying to establish himself as Emperor of Las Vegas when his term is up.
Oscar Goodman is thin skinned when it comes to Vegas, however Obama should apologize for "the context" of his remark. His intention was companies using tax dollars to go "anywhere", him clarifiying this and apologizing for explicitly mentioning Vegas would suffice...
While it isn't fun to hear Obama slam the banking institutions for planning trips to Vegas, unfortunately I don't blame him. The hospitality and gaming industries are pretty much dependent on consumers and businesses having disposable income... when that dries up these industries will feel the pain more than others. If our economy wasn't dependent on such a "one-trick pony" we'd be in a better position right now. Maybe this economic meltdown will motivate our city and county officials to do a better job of attracting other industries to the area instead of depending on tourism and gaming.
Pacificnorthwesterner, I suggest you move back to the Pacific Northwest and leave the desert to those of us who can handle it. We did just fine with our one-trick pony until everyone showed up in the 1990s looking for a ride. Get off my pony and go home.
Aw c'mon, Oscar. You can't be serious. It was obvious to anyone with enough brain cells to fill a shot glass what Obama meant. He doesn't need to apologize.
Our tax dollars shouldn't be used to send these fat-cats to Vegas, or any place else (except maybe the slammer!)
President Obama should apologize right after Oscar apologizes for a*inine comments about legalizing prostitution.
Isn't it interesting no one has mentioned the Orlando area? Take a gander at their convention and visitor's bureau calender and the "big" companies with scheduled outings there. I don't see Mickey's butt being hauled out in Congressional hearings. It costs just as much if not more to go to Orlando and ride the rides as it does to come to Vegas.
Too bad Wells Fargo was getting dissed so bad. What they got amounted to more of a loan than anything. I guess Obama doesn't need Las Vegas as much as he did last year. Anyone want an "SEIU For Obama" local badge?
Hey RPJ: It was Las Vegas itself in the 90s that decided to attract all of us here outsiders with all of this promotion of family and such. I notice that when the local dollars were flowing, people weren't complaining about it. I have as much right to live here and participate in the future direction of this place as you or anyone else. I pay my taxes and I buy local. You are not that special.
HEY TEASER ARE YOU FOR REAL??? THAT ATTRACTED YOU WITH FAMILY AND SUCH?!? FIRST OFF NO LAS VEGAS NEVER WAS A FAMILY DESTINATION SECONDLY, IF YOU EVER THOUGHT THAT EVEN IF THEY DID MARKET THEMSELVES THAT WAY YOU ARE A MORON FOR BELIEVING IT
AND LASTLY, YOUR AN IDIOT FOR THINKING THAT LAS VEGAS WAS FAMILY AND SUCH
VEGAS IS AN HONEST CITY PEOPLE SAY WE HAVE DRUGS, GAMBLING, PROSTITUTION BUT LET ME GIVE YOU A LITTLE KNOWN FACT THE SAME "SINS" OCCUR IN EVERY MAJOR CITY AND EVERY SMALL TOWN IN AND AROUND THE ENTIRE WORLD AND HAS BEEN THAT WAY SINCE THE BEGINNING OF CIVILAZATION
LAS VEGAS IS JUST A LITTLE MORE IN THE OPEN WITH IT
SURE IT HAS A LTTLE MORE OF IT THAN OTHER PLACES BUT THERE IS STILL ALOT OF SINFUL BEHAVIOR GOING ON IN EVERY HOUSEHOLD IN AMERICA AND AROUND THE WORLD
rusty57 Wells Fargo got 25 Billion and it was not a loan.It may be true Wells fargo may have been in better shape than most other banks but 25 Billion is a lot of taxes paid by working people who for some reson now can not get a break from these banks who begged for help only to enrich themselves. If you would read the latest polls a majority of Las Vegas residents agree with Obama. What a reach with your "SEIU for Obama" bs. It is nice for once to have a oresident who will speak his mind and tell the truth unlike the scum bag for the last eight years. Just another uneducated right wing neocon evangelist who has been programmed by Rush and Fox News.
When President Obama made his statement concerning Las Vegas, it was not a dig on this wonderful city; it was a dig on the banks and corporations using bailout money, paid for by US, to pay for these pricey trips and it wasn't just to Vegas, it was also to that pricey spa resort in Orange County, CA and any other luxery destination. As usual, the king of Whine and Dine, Mayor Goodman, had to work an angle to force an apology out of our president. Mayor Goodman? Grow a skin you old windbag!
I have to agree with JeniferD. I no longer live in Vegas, but I did for 3 1/2 years & really enjoyed my time there. President Obama's remarks were directed more at picking a business place that was less expensive & with less temptations to leave the 'business' behind & go play in the city. Which as we all know can also be costly.
Goodman needs to spend more time with fixing Vegas' problems & less time acting all indignant about what he perceives as a slight.
The President should be more sensitive not to toss out the baby with the bath water.
Why hurt anybody. Why create more unemployment. Why hurt any business or industry. Obama is just learning the new job. Those of you making him out to be right????? There's no reason for him to apologize. Just be more careful the next time. Goodman's letter to Obama was well stated. He didn't ask for any apology.
Casino's have been fleecing the customers for years. Go somewhere else until the management gets a clue.
Excellent acting Oscar, way to go! You are a master marketeer!!! I bow at the feet of the Guru in the Desert whose sole purpose is to keep bringing people out here!
Oscar is a good man.
Ensign is the one who needs to apologize for criticising Reid and Titus for pursuing the high speed train and voting against this great technology to help Las Vegas
