Las Vegas Sun sports reporters Ray Brewer and Case Keefer take a look around the Las Vegas high school football scene. They give their picks for the upcoming week and discuss the merits of eating orange wedges on long gameday road trips.

I am finding it hard to get the pod case to play on my phone or computer. Is anyone else having difficulty?
Having trouble myself. Cannot download podcast on either phone or through computer. What's up LVSun?

Gang: Let me look into it. ...
Hey guys: Podcast should be working now. Bizarre technical problem that we still don't understand. Sorry for the inconvenience. Thanks for listening.
much appreciated. thanks guys
Brewer- My first thought about the uniforms was "wow"...specially the helmets up close. They look pretty billy bad a$$. I made a comment to a parental unit of one of the players about how my calculations figure that Gorman has a total of 5 brand new uniforms and two helmets. That's when I was told that the uniforms for the Servite game, polo's and shoes for coaches were gifts from Nike to both Servite and Gorman.
I also thought that there were plenty of other schools who could use them. Not like Gorman asked for uni's but obviously Nike is not giving Servite and Gorman free uniforms out of the goodness in their hearts, they are doing it as a business for maximum exposure national tv and hopefully each team (tops in their state) wears them again later down the season. But it was discussed in the gorman stands.
And like i said in the weekly picks post, picking Canyon to beat Rancho by 3 just further cements my belief that your ranking them in the top ten is based on potential not product
Dayum Brewer you have no love for the Liberty community. I was cracking up when you said "Desert Pines already beat 'em bro, they beat them for one half and than they got tired." Beating a team for one half as you should know does not win the game. You build all of liberty's opponents to be better and doing the extra things to beat liberty.
Like liberty is not out there practicing, conditioning, watching film, learning schemes to put them in the right position to make plays. No liberty doesn't do any of that they jus show up on friday night and play and the coaches make up plays right there on the fly.
But please don't stop hating on liberty cause the more you hate on them the more determine they are to win the game. HEY you know what I really think you do it on purpose Brewer cause you truly are a Patriot fan. So a great job goes out to you for inspiring the Patriots to play at their best. Im jus saying.....
I thought the Gorman uni's was SICK...sick meaning good...lol. If they had enough black pants to go around I don't think the uniforms would have been great. I'm jus saying....
Gorman's helmets and uniforms were nicer looking than most colleges. Like i have posted before, no other school in Southern Nevada can compete with them as all of the top players want to go there for the uniforms, national exposure and the facilities and so they clearly have an unfair advantage in attracting and bringing in all of the top players. The only school that can play with Gorman is Liberty due to its size and RB Kepeli who is the best RB in Nevada. Other than Liberty, i believe Gorman's jv would beat the other schools even though they would be a bit smaller than some of the other schools. And Ray, you shoulve stayed for the 2nd half of Gorman's jv game against Servite as it was a great game. QB Hong came out firing in the 2nd half in making throws all over the field, including 2 very impressive td passes. And I agree with Case in that Hong even looks impressive in warmups. i just wish he would have gone to the school he was zoned for. He's an example of Gorman having an unfair advantage in getting all of the top players. Im hoping either Liberty or Las Vegas will pull off the upset in beating Gorman in the state championship.
Ray, i thihk Liberty had a better chance of beating Gorman last year than this year. They have the right ingredients this year to challenge them and will certainly give Gorman a way better game than Vegas would. Even with the athletes Vegas has (mainly Victor and Henderson) they don't have the size to create the holes to compete against Gorman. I think Arbor View and Palo would also smoke Vegas this year.
Armwood had an entire offense and defense full of Victor's and Henderson's and much better. Vegas isn't complete enough to challenge Gorman.
I really hope Liberty gets better as the season goes and I have no doubt they'll beat Vegas again. Liberty has the size and the style of football that can catch and unprepared Gorman off guard. Sanchez will have his work cut out for him keeping the players heads in the game. As it is the starters know they likely wont play a full four quarters of football until the Sunset semi finals. Liberty may have the perfect chance to surprise them. Either way i'd love to see a good state semi championship game. Whoever wins the south will go up to Reno and win. The best Reno has this year, Reed, is maybe good enough for second or third in the Southeast division.
Now I really like what you guys are saying...lol. I'm a big liberty fan and I would like to agree with everything, but I know for a fact that the liberty commuinty is not looking that far down the road. We have basic this week and we're going to work hard and be well prepared for a good football team with good coaches. But I do thank you RayC and tuasdad for the praises, jus got to take one team at a time....and with Hong playing for the Liberty patriots we knew all along that he was going to Gorman. His dad is Fertita's lawyer, so its only fitting that he goes there. Good kid though with a lot of football knowledge, he should be the next starting QB after Anu graduates. I know Cunningham is there, but I don't think he's a better QB than Hong...I'm jus saying....
Honestly there isn't a team in town that can challenge Gorman. How could you say that Liberty could beat Gorman, but Liberty couldn't beat Arbor who isn't capable of beating Gorman. Liberty is not a very good football team. They were much better last year, they have a serious lack of foot speed and their line is seriously overrated. If you can match up with them on the line like Gorman, or Arbor you can handle Liberty. Their skill players can't create on their own. No one in Nevada can beat Gorman.
Guru-- this is true. I was trying not to be cruel. I didn't say they could beat them. I said they had the tools to catch them off guard. I said Liberty has a better shot than Vegas, which they do. The only team in the state that could keep Gorman within 40 points (if gorman keeps starters in 4 quarters that is) would be Palo. And even though Arbow View might be better than Palo, we know that Palo does not fear Gorman and comes out and hits them in the mouth every year. That rivalry goes a long way. Don Bosco (#1 in country in some polls) only beat their local rival Bergen Catholic by 11 points this past week. Bad blood goes a long way.
I'm excited to see how Basic does against Liberty and how the north shapes out. This again is one of those years where the best 3 from the NW and top team from the SE, NE and SW are all arguably better than the best from the north who gets a free pass into the title game. The winner of the north will get it incredibly easy road compared to those who have to win the south this year.
tuasdad,
I agree with the psychological aspect of the Gorman vs Palo rivalry. It does give Palo an advantage a lot of programs don't have. The North is a joke, I don't understand what has happened to McQueen? They used to put out awesome teams, and they seem to lack the same size and physicality they once possessed.
Ray and Case....I think it would be cool for you guys to do a segment on the top DB's in the city. Foothill's Morris, Basic's Boyd, and Bonanza's Bennion are all having big years. I believe they are all juniors as well. Db's never seem to get much attention i think it would be a cool segment
