From the school

J.D. Smith has a Title I parent involvement policy that is developed jointly with staff and parents and revised accordingly, based on input from Parent Advisory Committee members. Our policy builds a stronger capacity for parent involvement by providing families with bilingual information and communication. It also encourages parents and community members to volunteer and guides them in helping their children learn at home. J.D. Smith also facilitates families and community participation in school decision-making by providing opportunities for parents to openly discuss concerns and share ideas.

During the fall and spring, J.D. Smith Middle School provides parents with the opportunity to attend school with their children during two community partnership days. Furthermore, literacy and math/science family nights are held to train parents how to academically motivate their children. Parents are also provided with materials and training to assist their children with learning. UNLV/GEAR-UP also facilitates training regarding attendance, college awareness and financial aid for parents during parent advisory committee meetings.
