Hancock Elementary School is one of five Clark County schools undergoing massive changes in order to bring student test scores up. Unlike Elizondo Elementary School, the school was able to keep its principal, Jerre Moore. As the school's fourth principal in a decade, she brings 38 years of classroom and administrative experience.

Moore has implemented tougher teaching reform, like rewriting teacher lesson plans and actively participating in learning by dropping in classes and sometimes even teaching them herself. She made grading harsher and opened up to parents about low student standardized test scores. In her first year as principal, the school’s standardized reading and math scores improved by 15 and 16 percent.

Hancock has a diverse student population. More than 80 percent of students claim a race other than white and almost 55 percent of those students are Hispanic.

As part of building renovations the school has transformed a classroom into a center that will help teach Hancock parents how to learn basic English and other life skills.

“The Hispanic parents do not get involved in the school activities (but) totally trust the school to educate their children,” Moore wrote. The solution: Develop a welcoming culture.

Moore wants teachers to “shake every parent’s hand and thank them for getting their child to school on time or thank them for ensuring that they make sure their child has prepared their homework.”

The Hispanic Museum of Nevada traces its humble beginnings to an empty display case with broken glass at the St. Christopher Catholic School. It was 20 years ago, and teacher Lynnette Sawyer wanted to display some items for her students.
