Mr. Gaughan's "Four Seasons Club" was the best promotion ever for out-of-state tourists. Hit a jackpot of $100.00 or more and you could stay free for three nights four times a year (once each "season"). In addition, the El Cortez would mail the lucky winners a free meal coupon plus a photo of their jackpot win.
I used to request Room 321 in the old section of the hotel, and I became so fond of that lovely suite that I made it the setting of a book I wrote, although I changed the name of the hotel.
Happy birthday, Mr. Gaughan. You've been responsible for so many happy memories for your guests because of your wonderfully innovative promotions.

Five or six years ago, I was playing poker at the El Cortez and it turns out the he was playing at the same table, still mentally sharp at the time while pushing 90. They told me who he was after he got up and left.
