So You Think You Can Belly Dance?

“Hear the music! Feel the music!” encourages Las Vegas belly dance instructor Heather Curcio during the first round of the So You Think You Can Belly Dance? auditions. Sixteen contestants from all around the United States, Canada, and one woman from South Korea gathered inside a small unadorned conference room upstairs at the Flamingo Hotel last Thursday for a chance to become the top belly dancer and win a $500 prize during the Las Vegas Bellydance Intensive and Festival. The atmosphere was friendly and non-competitive; it was mostly about having fun and learning new moves. “Don’t forget about butt reverb,” reminds Curcio, talking about how the butt keeps jiggling on its own after a dance move. “The audience loves it.”
