“From the Archives” is an occasional gallery of photos culled from the Las Vegas Sun photo archives. These photos, taken by long-time Sun photographer Ken Jones, are from a January 7, 1967 explosion at the Orbit Inn at Fremont and 7th. January 7, 1967. Richard James Paris, a 28-year-old Army deserter, committed suicide by firing a handgun into a pile of dynamite, also killing his wife Christine and four others. Yuo can't get dynamite anymore? Well, at least you can still get Tannerite, but then you need a high-power rifle to set it off. God Bless America!

After reading the comments on this photo gallery, we decided to go find the original story from the Las Vegas Sun about this incident. Not sure it will answer the questions some of you have posed, but here is the original story from the Jan. 8, 1967 edition of the Sun:

I think the sargent in the photo may be Mr.Wayne Anderson. He retired in 1974 from LVMPD...He died in sept.of 2005...I miss the guy.
My Dad was Capt. Wayne Littlefield, LVFD, who was one of the Firefighters who fought this fire. He fought at every major Las Vegas fire and was highly commended for his bravery from 1957 to 1984. RIP Dad, I was always proud of you and you EARNED every penny in wages they paid you!
