Winning the West
Mon, Aug 18, 2008 (11:31 a.m.)
Driving through the historic plaza of Mesilla, N.M., on Sunday, I noticed a man sitting in the middle of the gazebo. It was Dave Curtis, a Las Cruces resident of 26 years, and maker and seller of turquoise jewelry — and Barack Obama supporter. Curtis is an excited Democrat. “We’ve got to take this back,” he said of this year’s presidential election. His dream ticket? Obama/Clinton. He was patiently awaiting the start of Sunday Mercado, where he sells his jewelry. His necklaces: One he made from a piece of Kingman turquoise from Kingman, Ariz., and the other is a Santo Domingo turquoise piece he picked up from a pawn shop many years ago.
