The nearly-completed Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles is framed by city lights, Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999. The $375-million arena will be home to the Lakers, Clippers, Kings and arena football, as well as hosting many special events including the 2000 Democratic National Convention. The facility is scheduled to open Saturday, Oct. 16, with a public blessing by Cardinal Roger Mahony, followed by an invitation-only charity gala.
