Anu Solomon deserved some praise after this performance. So when Bishop Gorman coach Tony Sanchez spotted Solomon after his team’s 31-7 victory against Cimarron-Memorial in the Sunset Region Championship game, he called the freshman quarterback over and put his arm around him.

A star-studded high school football game of this magnitude is a rarity in Las Vegas. But, with the season on the line Friday night for two of Southern Nevada’s marquee programs, this playoff game has the makings of a classic. Bishop Gorman High, the often controversial private school, hosts public school power Palo Verde at 7 p.m. on Friday in the Sunset Regional semifinals.

Funeral arrangements are set for Palo Verde High assistant football coach Dave Castro. A viewing will be from 2 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday at Christ the King Catholic Community on Torrey Pines Drive and Tropicana Avenue. A funeral mass will follow at 5 p.m.

Although last year’s champion, Marc Turnesa, bowed out of the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open on Friday, 2007’s top man, George McNeill, is still very much in it. McNeill had the best round of the day on Saturday with an 8-under 63. He enters the final round two strokes back from the co-leaders.

Marc Turnesa, last year’s champion, did not make the cut after posting a 1-under for the first two days. It’s been a rough year from Turnesa. After ending last year with a victory at TPC Summerlin, he has not finished higher than 30th in any tournament this year.

Piercy tried to focus on golf in the opening round of the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospital for Children Open at TPC at Summerlin Thursday, but he found it a little difficult with his wife due to give birth at any moment.

Palo Verde running back Brandon Wright said that before Friday’s game, his uncle told him to never put his head down and to make big plays for his team when they need it most. That’s exactly what Wright did in a hard-fought 48-34 victory against The three times the Desert Shields pulled within a score of the Panthers, Wright answered with touchdowns.

Home was extra sweet for Asia Muhammad at the Red Rock Country Club on Wednesday. The 18-year-old Henderson native fed off a partisan hometown crowd to dominate seventh-seeded Heidi El Tabakh in the first round of the Lexus of Las Vegas Open.

The Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open held its media day Tuesday morning at TPC Summerlin. But ‘pep rally’ may have served as a more appropriate title for the event, as no one associated with the tournament shied away from sharing their excitement. The tournament will run from Oct. 15 to 18 at TPC Summerlin.

Despite graduating nearly its entire starting backfield, Palo Verde did not appear to miss a step in its season opener. The defending Southern Nevada champion Panthers did what they do best and ran over Spring Valley 35-7 with nearly 300 rushing yards Friday night.

Centennial had no reason to suspect anything out of the ordinary when Green Valley lined up for a 44-yard field goal attempt with seven minutes remaining in Friday night’s game. Green Valley senior kicker Nolan Kohorst is widely considered to have the strongest leg in the Las Vegas valley.
