New UNLV forward Roscoe Smith has a national title. He also has the No. 1 spot on Sportscenter’s worst plays of 2011. And he isn’t even halfway through college. Smith, who transferred last week to the Rebels from UConn, started as a freshman on the Huskies’ national-title team. Earlier in that season, on Jan. 8, 2011, he made a name for himself for another, much less flattering reason.

Plans for the UNLV basketball team’s summer trip to Canada were released Friday. The Rebels will play four exhibition games north of the border from Aug. 16 to 22 during their stay in Ottawa and Montreal. In Ottawa, they will play Aug. 18 against Carleton University and Aug. 19 against Ottawa University. Games in Montreal will be played Aug. 20 and 21 against a to be determined opponent.

UNLV’s golf team — ranked No. 7 in the country — will head this week to the NCAA regional’s without coach Dwaine Knight, who’s recovering from a recent surgery. In his place, assistant coach JC Deacon will lead the team in the Greensboro Regional this Thursday-Saturday as it attempts to qualify for the national tournament. “I have full confidence in JC to lead our team at the NCAA Regional,” Knight said in a statement.

Findlay Prep forward Anthony Bennett has trimmed his list to two — UNLV and Oregon. Just a few days after cutting Florida from his final four school choices, Bennett has now cut Kentucky out of the picture, according to his AAU coaches.

UNLV football will play three of its 13 games on national television, according to the Mountain West national TV schedule released Thursday. The games include the season opener on Thursday, Aug. 30 against Minnesota (CBS Sports Network), a home game on Friday, Sept. 14 against Washington State (ESPN) and a road conference game on Saturday, Oct. 20 at Boise State (NBC Sports Network).

The inaugural event for the Dave Rice Foundation is one day away, with the UNLV basketball coach set to host “An Evening with Dave Rice” at the Palms on Friday night. The event, which includes a VIP cocktail reception, silent auction and the presentation of a community-service award, will benefit the Dave Rice Foundation and the UNLV Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Report: Utah State and San Jose State will join Mountain West

UNLV fans excited to get the “I Believe” chant out of the conference will now get it from the originators. The Salt Lake Tribune reported Sunday night that Utah State and San Jose State will leave the Western Athletic Conference and join the Mountain West in 2013, according to multiple sources. The move is expected to be completed within the next seven to 10 days.

Eddie Owens, the all-time leading scorer in UNLV men’s basketball history, leads the UNLV Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2012, it was announced Wednesday. The class includes six former players, one former coach, the 1984 football team and Mike Miller, a local graphic artist who created the UNLV mascot Hey Reb. Former football player and longtime ESPN personality Kenny Mayne will also be honored as the second recipient of the Silver Rebel Award.
