    When this youth basketball game became a highly contested affair late in the fourth quarter Thursday, the 8- and 9-year-old girls in the Henderson recreation league weren’t alone in sharing in the excitement. That’s because members of the UNLV women’s basketball team made their annual appearance at the Downtown Recreation Center to visit during both of the league’s under-10 games.

    Thanks to a calm first lap and an exquisite kick around the final turn, UNLV assistant track coach Khadevis Robinson is going back to the Olympics. In Monday night’s finals at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore., Robinson ran a picture-perfect race to finish second in the 800 meters.

    UNLV assistant coach Khadevis Robinson is one race away from his second Olympic team. Robinson, 35, won his semifinal heat of the 800 meters Saturday at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore. His time of 1 minute, 45.83 seconds was the fastest out of both heats, which makes him the top seed going into Monday's finals (7:47 p.m. on NBC Sports Network).

    UNLV assistant track coach Khadevis Robinson won his heat and advanced to the semifinals of the 800 meters Friday at the US Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore. Robinson, 35, finished in 1 minute, 47.3 seconds for the victory. There were four heats with a total of 16 runners — the top three in each heat and the next four fastest times — advancing to Saturday’s semifinals, which start at 4:45 p.m.

    UNLV’s Amanda Bingson is going to the London Olympics after finishing second in the hammer throw at the U.S. Olympic Trials on Thursday in Eugene, Ore. Bingson, a Silverado High School graduate, threw a personal best 71.78 meters at the meet, which would have been a meet record had Amber Campbell, a professional, not nudged her with a throw of 71.8.

On May 6, with the Rebels (26-29, 7-17) in the heat of a race for the final spot in this weekend’s four-team Mountain West Conference baseball tournament in Las Vegas, UNLV scored four runs in the ninth inning for a crucial 5-4 victory at San Diego State.

    Rebels Roundup: Golf team will travel to regionals without coach Dwaine Knight

    UNLV’s golf team — ranked No. 7 in the country — will head this week to the NCAA regional’s without coach Dwaine Knight, who’s recovering from a recent surgery. In his place, assistant coach JC Deacon will lead the team in the Greensboro Regional this Thursday-Saturday as it attempts to qualify for the national tournament. “I have full confidence in JC to lead our team at the NCAA Regional,” Knight said in a statement.
