It didn’t take long for Sandrine Nzeukou to realize she living out a dream. Nzeukou, a senior post player on the UNLV women’s basketball team, played for her native Cameroon last month.

When Tim Chambers took over the UNLV baseball program following the 2010 season, he knew that the first step toward building a nationally-recognized product was to excel in recruiting from the deep local talent pool. Last season, he was able to haul in several newcomers through his über-successful College of Southern Nevada pipeline. Now, he's pulling in the top prep ballplayers the Valley has to offer.

Adam Scott hit all the right shots Sunday in a round that was close to flawless and earned him his first World Golf Championship title. He celebrated with a caddie who has won quite a few more. Steve Williams, fired last month by Tiger Woods after a 12-year partnership, felt like a bigger winner when Scott rolled in one last birdie for a 5-under 65 and a four-shot victory in the Bridgestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio.

Not only was Tanner Peters the UNLV baseball team’s best pitcher this spring, the junior right-hander was also the best in the Mountain West Conference. Peters, who posted a 9-3 record with a 1.36 earned run average, was named Monday the 2011 Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Year as voted by the league’s coaches.

A brief five-minute tennis exhibition Saturday featuring the doubles team of UNLV football coach Bobby Hauck and basketball coach Dave Rice included plenty of laughable moments. The coaches missed long, hit the ball into the net, and on a few occasions, missed the ball altogether. But Hauck and Rice weren’t concerned with the outcome — they lost 7-4. Rather, it was being part of a community event the coaches said was most important.

When the UNLV baseball team opens the season Friday with a four-game series against visiting Maine, first-year Rebels head coach Tim Chambers might have an advantage over his coaching counterpart. It could be the same way for part of the season — at least early on. College baseball teams are using a new form of aluminum bat this spring, with the change making Chambers’ debut in the Division I ranks feel similar to his past 11 years on the junior college circuit.
