UNLV will bring back baseball coach Tim Chambers for two more years in hopes that he’ll build on the 69-59 record he’s compiled over the past three seasons.

Joey Lauria wasn’t ready to play Division I baseball. When Lauria, a 6-foot-4 right-handed pitcher, graduated from Legacy High in 2010, he was signed to join the team at UNLV. But new Rebels' coach Tim Chambers had other ideas, telling Lauria — who was a recruit of former coach Buddy Gouldsmith — he wasn’t part of the Rebels’ plans.

There are two ways to look at the UNLV women’s basketball team’s 2011-12 season. The most obvious, and probably the most accurate, is to view it as a success. UNLV went 22-10, its first 20-win season since 2003-04, finished second in the league and went to the postseason for the first time since 2006.

UNLV’s Amanda Bingson finished 13th in her heat of the women’s hammer throw Wednesday morning at the London Olympics. Bingson threw 67.29 meters, well off the mark needed to advance to the finals. Fellow Americans Amber Campbell (69.93) and Jessica Cosby (69.65) finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the other heat. The top four from each heat advanced to the finals.

When basketball player Diamond Major took an unofficial recruiting trip to the UNLV campus, the 5-foot-11 forward was shocked at what she saw. “The facilities are amazing,” she said. “I didn’t realize how big UNLV was until I went on a visit. I wondered (to myself) why I hadn’t seen this before having lived here my whole life?”

If not for basketball, Clark High grad and Nigerian track star Uhunoma Osazuwa might never have made it to the 2012 London Olympics. As a freshman entering Clark from Hyde Park, Osazuwa wasn’t sure whether she wanted to continue playing basketball, but a friend encouraged her to try out. Osazuwa made the team.
