North Texas is happy with the early response it’s seeing from fans who are buying tickets for the team’s New Year’s Day showdown with UNLV in the Heart of Dallas Bowl. Just like UNLV, the Mean Green are offering discounted student tickets, and the response has been good.

There may never be another UNLV football team like this one. The 1984 Rebels were the first in program history to reach a bowl game, topping Toledo 30-13 in the California Bowl to finish with an 11-2 record. It’s still the best record in school history.

An NCAA-allowed version of a shopping spree awaits the Rebels in Texas for the Heart of Dallas Bowl. The SportsBusiness Journal released its annual list of bowl gifts this week, and the main prize for UNLV’s game allows players to select a number of gifts up to a predetermined value.

Not once did Tina Kunzer-Murphy consider turning down a bowl bid for UNLV. No matter who came calling, the Rebels athletic director was going to answer Yes and then figure out the financial ramifications later. The Heart of Dallas Bowl came calling last Sunday morning, and now the university is in the process of figuring out how to put this trip together without going too far into the red.

UNLV placed three players on the All-Mountain West second team, the league announced today. Running back Tim Cornett, receiver Devante Davis and offensive lineman Brett Boyko all received the distinction after a 7-5 season that has the Rebels playing in the Heart of Dallas Bowl on Jan. 1.

Tyler Gaston had some apprehensions about the Jan. 1 date for UNLV’s bowl game. Every Rebel, including Gaston, was thrilled the team was selected for any game, but some put extra value on playing in the Heart of Dallas Bowl against North Texas because New Year’s Day is a traditional date for college football.

When people went to bed Saturday night there was no guarantee UNLV would play in a bowl game. Then came Sunday morning and a phone call to Athletic Director Tina Kunzer-Murphy that announced the Rebels would have to wait until 2014. Well, a few hours into it anyways.

Mountain West Commissioner Craig Thompson isn’t optimistic that all seven of the league’s bowl-eligible football teams will play in a bowl game. "I don't think it will happen," he said. The league has six bowl tie-ins, more than ever before, but it also has more teams eligible than ever before. In its first season with 12 teams, seven of them made it to at least 6-6 thanks to San Jose State’s 62-52 upset against Fresno State.

The fact we’re talking today about where a 7-5 UNLV team may play in a bowl game is a sign of how far the program has come in the past few months. Aside from the victory at UNR, this was easily the Rebels’ most important win of the year, especially when considering their quest to be picked for a bowl game for the first time in 13 seasons. With 78 teams bowl-eligible for 70 spots, this victory puts UNLV at the seven-win plateau, making them more attractive than teams stuck at six wins.
