UNLV football’s latest hire stays within the family as Rebels coach Bobby Hauck on Wednesday announced younger brother Tim Hauck as the team’s new defensive coordinator and cornerbacks coach.

The UNLV football program will be represented at this year’s NFL Scouting combine at the end of February in Indianapolis. The school announced Thursday that linebacker John Lotulelei is one of 300 draft prospects invited to the four-day combine.

These two recruits could be the gems the UNLV football program desperately needs. Athlete Torry McTyer from Cathedral High in Los Angeles and running back Keith Whitely from the Houston area had scholarship offers from more accomplished programs entering Wednesday’s national signing day. But despite the aggressive pushes from those schools, each signed a letter-of-intent with UNLV to highlight the Rebels’ 20-player class.

On paper, Jacobie Russell might not appear to be a big-time recruit for the UNLV football team. But, then again, neither were the others from his North Shore High in the Houston area when they signed with the Rebels’ football team. Russell, a 6-foot-4, 245-pound tight end who verbally committed to UNLV last week, only had eight catches for 111 yards and two touchdowns last fall for North Shore.

UNLV football adds four midyear JC transfers

Help is on the way for the UNLV football team in the name of four midyear junior college transfers. The school announced the signing Thursday and each player — two defensive linemen, an offensive lineman and wide receiver — will enroll at UNLV in January and compete in spring practice. They will be eligible to play in the 2013 season.
