Last weekend’s games moved us a week further into the season and pushed my thinking back a few weeks. While Boise State got knocked around by Air Force, Colorado State went to Boston College and won, making the Rams once again feel to me like the team standing atop the tire fire that is Mountain West football.

The Rebels’ road show continues this weekend at San Jose State (1-3, 0-1), where UNLV (1-4, 0-1) plays its third consecutive game away from Sam Boyd Stadium. Of course, it’s not like home has been much better this year.

Canyon Springs High grad Donnel Pumphrey ran for four touchdowns and 167 yards on 22 carries, burying the Rebels under another pile of rushing yards in a 34-17 loss for UNLV. The Rebels are now 1-4 with their rushing defense foremost among many issues plaguing them near the midpoint of the season.

The Rebels likely won’t need to wait on the NCAA making decisions on its own schedule this time around. UNLV coach Dave Rice said Thursday night that senior transfer Cody Doolin is completely cleared while the team hasn’t submitted any paperwork for senior transfer Jerome Seagears because they’re planning on redshirting him this season.
