Rashad Evans not completely ready to make peace with Jon Jones after UFC 145

    April 22, 2012

ATLANTA — This sounded like a rejection. A few minutes after defeating Rashad Evans by unanimous decision to retain his light heavyweight championship at UFC 145, a bubbly Jon Jones sat to the right of UFC President Dana White and gave a suggestion. Jones expressed a desire to renew a friendship with Evans.

    April 21, 2012

ATLANTA — Jon Jones failed to deliver the memorable knockout of Rashad Evans he promised at UFC 145 Saturday night. He’ll have to settle for a decisive unanimous-decision victory. Jones retained his light heavyweight championship belt, defending it for the third consecutive time by beating his former training partner at Philips Arena.

UFC 145 weigh-in: Wait is over for Jon Jones, Rashad Evans

    April 20, 2012

Jon Jones’ older brother whispered two words into the light heavyweight champion’s ear as he made his way to the scale at the Fox Theater to weigh in for tomorrow night’s UFC 145. “You ready,” asked Arthur Jones, a 6-foot-3, 313-pound defensive lineman for the Baltimore Ravens. With that prompt, Jones lost control. The emotion from the prolonged, fiery lead-up to his fight with Rashad Evans finally seemed to get to the 24-year-old as he yelled and bounced around the stage.

As brash as ever, Chael Sonnen sounds off at UFC 145 Q&A

    April 20, 2012

ATLANTA — The question-and-answer sessions the UFC holds before every weigh-in carry extra significance when Chael Sonnen is involved. The UFC’s top middleweight contender and most outspoken fighter seems to get the call to host the events more than anyone else on the roster. He entertained a few hundred fans and media members at the Fox Theater Friday ahead of the UFC 145 weigh-in.

    April 20, 2012

ATLANTA — When Michael McDonald received a $70,000 Knockout of the Night bonus check at UFC 139 six months ago, he immediately began to think about how he could spend it. Buying a house was one option for the 21-year old bantamweight. That wasn’t what he really wanted, though.

Take Five: What to watch for at UFC 145 beyond the main event

    April 19, 2012

ATLANTA — Sharing a fight card with Jon Jones and Rashad Evans isn’t the easiest proposition. With one of the biggest bouts of the year headlining UFC 145, the 22 other fighters slated to compete Saturday at Philips Arena have received little attention. That’s not how it traditionally goes in mixed martial arts, where a fight billed on the undercard sometimes receives as much hype as a championship bout.

UFC schedule kicks into high gear with Jon Jones vs. Rashad Evans

    April 19, 2012

ATLANTA — There’s a buzz for UFC 145 that other events lack. Much of the excitement for Saturday’s card at Philips Arena surrounds the light heavyweight championship bout between Jon Jones and Rashad Evans, one of the most hyped mixed martial arts matchups of the year, but that doesn’t tell the whole story.

UFC 145 breakdown, betting odds and picks

    April 18, 2012

ATLANTA — Oddsmakers have a hard time imagining the fight living up to the anticipation when it comes to the UFC 145 main event between Jon Jones and Rashad Evans. Sports books posted Jones as a -600 (risking $6 to win $1) favorite when the heated matchup was set three months ago, an unusually high betting line for a mixed martial arts bout of this magnitude.

Rashad Evans: ‘Jon Jones imitates me’

    April 13, 2012

Rashad Evans played no role in molding or inspiring anything UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones does in the octagon. That’s what Jones will tell anyone who asks. Evans can hardly believe it. Fingerprints of his influence are all over Jones’ style, according to Evans, and visible from the moment his former training partner enters an arena.

Jon Jones and Rashad Evans further sound off on their rivalry

    April 5, 2012

The most scrutinized relationship between current fighters on the UFC’s roster began in a nondescript conference hall at Red Rock Resort three years ago. That’s where Rashad Evans says he first met current champion Jon Jones. Evans’ coach at the time, Greg Jackson, planned to invite Jones to join their team in Albuquerque, so the two light heavyweights needed to meet.

    March 22, 2012

By the time April 21 rolls around, UFC 145 will come in as one of the most heavily promoted events in the company’s history. Main event rivals Jon Jones (15-1 MMA, 9-1 UFC) and Rashad Evans (17-1-1 MMA, 12-1-1 UFC) have already spent as much time making the media rounds as they have training ahead of the event scheduled for Atlanta’s Philips Arena.

True prize still awaits Rashad Evans after UFC on Fox 2 victory

    January 28, 2012

CHICAGO — The man that Rashad Evans spent 25 minutes battering Saturday night at the United Center was not his enemy. Evans’ real enemy peered over the fight from a television perch 25 yards away. The satisfaction Evans felt after a unanimous decision victory, in which he took all five rounds on all three judges’ scorecards, at UFC on FOX 2 had nothing to do with beating previously undefeated Phil Davis.

Rashad Evans still has words for Jon Jones

    May 13, 2011

Their fight might be indefinitely delayed, but the animosity between Jon Jones and Rashad Evans remains. The former teammates were slated to meet in Jones’ first defense of his light heavyweight belt, but UFC scrapped the bout two weeks ago when the champion announced he would undergo surgery for torn tissue in his thumb. Evans, who hasn’t fought in more than a year, accepted a fight against Phil Davis August 6 at UFC 133 in Philadelphia instead of waiting for Jones to recover.
