SAN JOSE, Calif. — Three Las Vegas fighters entered the octagon Saturday night at HP Pavilion as underdogs and exited with upset victories. Middleweight Wanderlei Silva, welterweight Martin Kampmann and light heavyweight Stephan Bonnar all defied the odds at UFC 139. Silva made the most emphatic statement as the longest shot of the three.

  • Dan Henderson, top, punches Mauricio Rua during the fourth round of a UFC 139 Mixed Martial Arts light heavyweight bout in San Jose, Calif., Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011. Henderson won by unanimous decision.

    November 19, 2011

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Nominating the UFC 139 main event between Dan Henderson and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua for Fight of the Night simply isn’t enough. The five-round light heavyweight war that Henderson won via unanimous decision — all three judges scored it 48-47 — was more like the Fight of the Year. Heck, it was maybe even the Fight of the Decade.

    November 18, 2011

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Although two preliminary card fighters came in over their weight limit, all 12 scheduled bouts are official for the UFC’s most improbable card of the year. The men in the final nine fights at tomorrow night’s UFC 139 made weight Friday at the HP Pavilion, which was an unlikely UFC venue as recently as eight months ago.

    November 18, 2011

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Even at something as simple as the UFC 139 weigh-in, the differences between top bantamweight opponents Brian Bowles and Urijah Faber are pronounced. Bowles walked lethargically to the scale Friday in front of a subdued crowd at the HP Pavilion. Faber burst out from behind the curtain, skipping and prompting even more applause from a frenzied audience.

  • Wanderlei Silva leaves the octagon after facing Chris Leben during UFC 132 Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Leben won by knock out 27 seconds into the first round.

Wanderlei Silva wants to prolong his career at UFC 139

    November 17, 2011

SAN FRANCISCO — Like 8.8 million other people in America, Wanderlei Silva spent part of last Saturday night watching the inaugural UFC on FOX fight. Unlike the millions of other viewers, Silva could relate closely to how it finished. Junior dos Santos knocked out Cain Velasquez 64 seconds into the bout after one big punch, not unlike what happened to Silva 29 seconds into his bout with Chris Leben this summer.

  • Dan Henderson celebrates his win over Fedor Emelianenko of Russia after their fight at Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Ill., on Saturday, July 30, 2011. Henderson won by TKO in the first round.

UFC belt serves as final frontier for eternally youthful Dan Henderson

    November 17, 2011

SAN FRANCISCO — If 41-year old Dan Henderson has a secret to his longevity in mixed martial arts, he isn’t sharing it. Henderson has won three straight fights and six of his last seven heading into Saturday’s UFC 139 main event against Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at the HP Pavilion in San Jose. No one has an explanation for the way he’s defied the traditional constraints of age — at least not a rational one.

  • Martin Kampmann takes a breather while working out at Xtreme Couture Gym in preparation for an upcoming fight at UFC 115 Friday, June 4, 2010.

Martin Kampmann fired up for UFC 139

    November 16, 2011

UFC welterweight Martin Kampmann suffered a defeat he can’t quite get over the last time he appeared in the octagon. It wasn’t anything Diego Sanchez did in the UFC on Versus 3 main event against him that made the bout so hard to forget. It was more what Sanchez didn’t do. Kampmann, a Las Vegas-based fighter who trains at Xtreme Couture, felt he dominated the fight and made Sanchez’s face into a punching bag. More than eight months later, Kampmann still can’t figure out how the judges awarded a unanimous decision to Sanchez.

    November 16, 2011

In many respects, the UFC is getting back to what it does best with Saturday's card at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. The event is loaded with 12 fights and most of them have close to pick'em lines in the sports books. All five of the bouts on the main card are about equally intriguing.

Nick Diaz fails to back up years worth of talk

UFC 158 A welterweight title fight that felt incredibly different wound up remarkably the same. Georges St. Pierre manhandled nemesis Nick Diaz with his wrestling. St. Pierre won every round on every judges' scorecard in Montreal for his sixth straight unanimous-decision victory. Diaz had preached his superiority over St. Pierre for years, but when he finally got his chance, he looked as helpless as all the other challengers to the 170-pound division's throne in the last six years. St. Pierre's consistency continued to amaze. Now it's on to Johny Hendricks, who defeated Carlos Condit in the evening's co-main event. Could he be the one to finally threaten St. Pierre?
