Chael Sonnen show returns with Las Vegas as likely next stop

    October 9, 2011

HOUSTON — Chael Sonnen swore the way he called out middleweight champion Anderson Silva after a UFC 136 victory over Brian Stann wasn’t premeditated. Sonnen choked out Stann at 3:51 of the second round and happened to see Silva, his Brazilian enemy, watching from the front row. As soon as Sonnen got a microphone in front of him, he challenged Silva to a rematch of their classic UFC 117 meeting. Silva stayed seated and smiled, which was not the response Sonnen had hoped for.

  • Frankie "The Answer" Edgar, left, is hit in the second round by Gray "The Bully" Maynard during the UFC 136 lightweight title bout, Saturday, Oct. 8, 2011, in Houston. Edgar knocked out Maynard in the fourth round.

UFC 136 live blog: Frankie Edgar finishes Gray Maynard in fourth round

    October 8, 2011

HOUSTON — Frankie Edgar said all week that his rivalry with Gray Maynard had a way of bringing the best out of him. There's no doubt about that after what took place Saturday night at the Toyota Center in the UFC 136 main event. Edgar kept his lightweight championship belt by scoring a TKO victory over Gray Maynard, a Las Vegas native, at 3:54 of the fourth round.

  • Gray Maynard winds up to hit Frankie Edgar during their lightweight title fight at UFC 125 Saturday, January 1, 2011 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Maynard and Edgar fought to a draw.

Gray Maynard out to return a title to Vegas at UFC 136

    October 8, 2011

Think of Las Vegas as a mixed martial arts empire without a current king. The valley is home to the world’s largest MMA promotion, the UFC, and a number of its fighters are spread throughout gyms across the city.

  • Jose Aldo throws a right uppercut toward Manny Gamburyan during their featherweight title fight at WEC 51 on Sept. 30, 2010, at 1st Bank Center in Broomfield, Colo. Aldo won by TKO in the second round.

Weight classes are a hot topic at UFC 136

    October 7, 2011

HOUSTON — Common courtesies are sometimes flipped the opposite way in the mixed martial arts world. Instead of never asking someone about their weight, for instance, it’s practically a requirement to pose those questions to fighters during the week of an event.

  • Lightweight champion Frankie Edgar and contender Gray Maynard pose for photos during the UFC 125 pre-fight press conference Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2010, at MGM Grand.

UFC 136 weigh-in: Deja vu for Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard

    October 7, 2011

HOUSTON — Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard have gone through this formality enough. Moments after both made weight at the Toyota Center for their UFC 136 main event bout, they got face-to-face and posed for their stare down photo. It seemed like the 100th time over the last three years, but in reality only the sixth or seventh. It’s a combat sports ritual, but one most fighters only have to go through once or twice per opponent.

  • Melvin Guillard winds up to hit Shane Roller in their lightweight bout at UFC 132 Saturday, July 2, 2011, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Guillard won by knockout in the second round.

Stakes are high for Melvin Guillard at UFC 136

    October 6, 2011

HOUSTON — Leave it to outspoken UFC lightweight Melvin Guillard to come up with an insightful metaphor to illustrate his current mindset. Guillard says he has a pretty good idea of how his UFC 136 pay-per-view bout with Joe Lauzon will go Saturday.

  • Middleweight fighter Chael Sonnen listens to a reporter's question during an interview at the Mandalay Bay Events Center Wednesday, February 3, 2010.

Chael Sonnen abnormally mute before meeting with Brian Stann

    October 5, 2011

HOUSTON — If the UFC ever wants to tone down the pre-fight banter from a certain fighter, all the promotion needs to do is pair him against surging middleweight Brian Stann. Look no further than what the UFC 136 matchup with Stann has done to Chael Sonnen for proof. Sonnen is traditionally the UFC’s most notorious trash talker, but he hasn’t even approached saying anything negative about Stann before their featured bout Saturday at the Toyota Center.

  • UFC 136 breakdown, betting odds and picks

    October 5, 2011

HOUSTON — When Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard fought for the lightweight championship at UFC 125, all four prognosticators in the Las Vegas Sun’s picks section sided with Edgar. In their rematch nine months later, scheduled for the main event of Saturday’s UFC 136, all four are picking Maynard.

  • Jose Aldo makes his entrance to the cage at WEC 51 on Sept. 30, 2010, at 1st Bank Center in Broomfield, Colo.

UFC 136 co-headliners Aldo and Florian have points to prove

    October 5, 2011

Jose Aldo dominated challenger Mark Hominick for the opening 20 minutes of their UFC featherweight championship fight six months ago. So excuse Aldo for a little frustration over the fact that the masses remember the bout more for its final five minutes, when Hominick fought off a baseball-sized hematoma on his head to pummel the champion from top position.

  • Lightweight champion Frankie Edgar takes questions from the media during UFC 125 open workouts Thursday, December 30, 2010, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Frankie Edgar could be the UFC’s most underappreciated champion

    October 4, 2011

No notable set of mixed martial arts rankings list UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar better than the No. 5 pound-for-pound fighter in the world. Many have Edgar (13-1-1 MMA, 8-1-1 UFC), who defends his title against Gray Maynard (10-0-1 MMA, 8-0-1 UFC) in the UFC 136 main event Saturday in Houston, out of the top five all together. UFC President Dana White struggles to understand that logic.

  • Gray Maynard chases Frankie Edgar to the fence during the first round of their lightweight title fight during UFC 125 Saturday, January 1, 2011 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Maynard and Edgar fought to a draw.

Gray Maynard ‘obsessed’ with beating Frankie Edgar at UFC 136

    September 29, 2011

Frankie Edgar revealed in recent interviews that he was tired of the lingering build-up associated with his fight against Gray Maynard. It’s safe to say that Maynard, the Las Vegas-based challenger to Edgar’s lightweight championship belt, doesn’t feel the same. Maynard said he had become “obsessed” with beating Edgar since the two fought to a draw at UFC 125 in January.

UFC goes on fight booking spree that includes two championship bouts

    July 15, 2011

The calendar indicates an off week for the UFC. The promotion’s matchmaking staff, led by Joe Silva, would likely disagree. The UFC has used its recent downtime between fight cards to plan bouts for its fall schedule.

  • Brian Stann and Jorge Santiago trade punches during their fight at UFC 130 Saturday, May 28, 2011 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Stann won by TKO.

Chael Sonnen vs. Brian Stann leads list of recently announced UFC bouts

    July 11, 2011

Two of the biggest questions in the UFC middleweight division a week ago were whom Chael Sonnen would fight in his return from a suspension and who would get the next shot at rising star Brian Stann. Turns out Sonnen (25-11-1 MMA, 4-4 UFC) and Stann (11-3 MMA, 5-1 UFC) will fight each other in what could possibly become a bout to determine the top 185-pound contender. Sonnen vs. Stan became the first fight announced for UFC 136, which will take place Oct. 8 in Houston.
