Vitor Belfort destroys Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 133

    August 7, 2011

PHILADELPHIA — The one criticism surrounding Vitor Belfort’s storied mixed martial arts career is his inconsistency. Detractors say they never know which version of the 34-year-old Belfort will show up at any given event. If that’s true, then an opponent should want to avoid awakening the stashed-away rage inside Belfort at all costs.

UFC 133 live blog: Rashad Evans stops Tito Ortiz in the second round

    August 6, 2011

PHILADELPHIA — Rashad Evans and Vitor Belfort had practically the same two-word message for the mixed martial arts world after their UFC 133 victories — "I'm back." After a 14-month layoff that involved plenty of drama and a training camp change, Evans looked as impressive as ever Saturday night at the Wells Fargo Center. He beat old foe Tito Ortiz by second round TKO.

UFC 133 weigh-in: Tension mounting between Evans, Ortiz

    August 5, 2011

PHILADELPHIA — The end of the UFC 133 weigh-ins at the Wells Fargo Center Friday felt a lot like the promotion’s old days. UFC President Dana White stuck his hand in between Rashad Evans and Tito Ortiz as they posed for their customary stare-down photo.

  • Chael Sonnen flexes after weighing in for UFC 117 in Oakland, Calif.

    August 5, 2011

PHILADELPHIA — When UFC middleweight Chael Sonnen opens his mouth, the mixed martial arts world pauses to listen. Sonnen is one of the sport’s most colorful personalities and an avid trash talker. With a possible title eliminator bout against Brian Stann scheduled for Oct. 8, the UFC had an easy choice in making Sonnen the featured question-and-answer guest before UFC 133’s weigh-in Friday.

Late bloomer’ Mike Pyle out to spoil another prospect with upset at UFC 133

    August 4, 2011

PHILADELPHIA — Part of UFC President Dana White’s job is to interact with the hundreds of mixed martial artists on his promotion’s roster. It’s not easy for one fighter’s message on his career to stand out in White’s mind and requires some combination of conviction, distinctiveness and self-assurance. Las Vegas-based welterweight Mike Pyle was able to get his feelings through to the boss in advance of his UFC 133 bout against Rory MacDonald Saturday at the Wells Fargo Center.

  • Light heavyweight fighter "Suga" Rashad Evans, right, is interviewed by Joe Rogan during the official UFC 114 weigh-in at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.

Rashad Evans not buying the Tito Ortiz comeback script at UFC 133

    August 3, 2011

PHILADELPHIA — It’s unclear whether Tito Ortiz plans to emulate Rocky Balboa and run up the 72 steps outside of the Philadelphia Museum of Art before his UFC 133 bout against Rashad Evans on Saturday. The 36-year old Ortiz has spent plenty of time comparing himself to the City of Brotherly Love’s most famous fictional character. The juxtaposition has annoyed Evans.

  • UFC 133 betting odds and picks

    August 3, 2011

PHILADELPHIA — Las Vegas sports books and Rashad Evans are in agreement when it comes Tito Ortiz’s chances of winning in Saturday’s UFC 133 main event. Neither Evans nor oddsmakers think it’s very likely. While Evans spent Wednesday’s open workouts telling reporters why Ortiz wouldn’t beat him, betting boards 2,500 miles listed “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” as a sizable underdog.

  • Tito Ortiz celebrates after beating Ryan Bader in a main card bout at UFC 132 Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Ortiz snapped a near five-year winless streak with the win.

Why Tito Ortiz decided to accept UFC 133 bout with Rashad Evans

    August 2, 2011

For a man who has made a career out of being instinctual in every situation, Tito Ortiz is hoping his initial reaction to fighting at Saturday’s UFC 133 was wrong. Ortiz originally turned down the opportunity to face Rashad Evans in the Philadelphia card’s main event. He was a week removed from a career-revitalizing victory against Ryan Bader when UFC President Dana White asked him to replace the injured Phil Davis and take on Evans.

  • Vitor Belfort douses his head with water while working out in preparation for his upcoming fight against Yoshihiro Akiyama Saturday, July 30, 2011.

Goal hasn’t changed for UFC 133’s Vitor Belfort

    August 1, 2011

Nothing about the way Vitor Belfort speaks would lead anyone to believe he’s coming off of the most lopsided loss of his career. Belfort took an Anderson Silva front kick to the chin in the first round of their UFC 126 main event bout to end his dreams of holding the middleweight championship belt. Belfort said it took him no time to get over the setback. “I make sure every day I’m getting happier and having more joy,” he said. “I feel much better. Today, I’m a happier man.”

Dana White: ‘The new Tito is awesome’

    July 14, 2011

The decade-long saga between UFC President Dana White and Tito Ortiz has taken yet another unforeseen turn. Two weeks after White was nearly certain he’d fire the former UFC light heavyweight champion, Ortiz is now the equivalent of the promotion’s employee of the month. Ortiz accepted a last-minute fight against Rashad Evans in the main event of UFC 133 August 6 in Philadelphia, putting him in the good graces of a boss he’s frequently clashed with over the years.

Tito Ortiz fills in for Phil Davis at UFC 133

    July 13, 2011

When Tito Ortiz and Rashad Evans fought four years ago, their bout ended without resolution. The judges announced a unanimous draw after Evans and Ortiz battled for three rounds at UFC 73 in Sacramento, Calif. Ortiz would have won, but the referee docked him one point for continually holding onto the cage. They’ll have a chance to come to a more decisive conclusion at UFC 133 August 6 in Philadelphia.

  • Phil Davis flexes on the scale during an official weigh-in for UFC 109 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center Friday, February 5, 2010.

UFC 133 fight card officially announced

    June 1, 2011

Phil Davis has followed the ongoing saga between UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and Rashad Evans mostly as an interested observer the past few months. “I think it’s funny,” Davis said while in town for UFC 130. “I like them both and I think it’s funny that they don’t like each other.” Davis (9-0 MMA, 5-0) will now stick himself square in the middle of the feud when he faces Evans (15-1-1 MMA, 10-1-1 UFC) in the main event of UFC 133 August 6 in Philadelphia.

Rashad Evans still has words for Jon Jones

    May 13, 2011

Their fight might be indefinitely delayed, but the animosity between Jon Jones and Rashad Evans remains. The former teammates were slated to meet in Jones’ first defense of his light heavyweight belt, but UFC scrapped the bout two weeks ago when the champion announced he would undergo surgery for torn tissue in his thumb. Evans, who hasn’t fought in more than a year, accepted a fight against Phil Davis August 6 at UFC 133 in Philadelphia instead of waiting for Jones to recover.
