Chris Leben may have ended Wanderlei Silva’s career at UFC 132

    July 3, 2011

Well, they came out swinging at each other as advertised — for all of 27 seconds. The UFC 132 co-main event between middleweights Wanderlei Silva (33-11-1 MMA, 3-6 UFC) and Chris Leben (26-7 MMA, 12-6 UFC) played out in wild fashion at the MGM Grand Garden Arena Saturday night. Leben threw three consecutive uppercuts, the last of which floored Silva and sent him away with a devastating knockout loss in the first round.

UFC 132 live blog: Dominick Cruz keeps belt; Tito Ortiz scores upset

    July 2, 2011

Two of the three featured bouts at UFC 132 Saturday night lasted less than 2:30 combined. The main event went on for more than 10 times longer than that. After Tito Ortiz submitted Ryan Bader to save his career at 1:56 of the first round and Chris Leben knocked out Wanderlei Silva 27 seconds into their fight, the bantamweight championship bout went the distance in one of the most competitive fights of the year. Dominick Cruz exited the octagon with his belt still around his waist, as he beat Urijah Faber via unanimous decision (50-45, 49-46, 48-47).

UFC 132 victory could take Dominick Cruz’s career to the next level

    June 30, 2011

Let’s say the UFC decided to hold an autograph session for UFC 132 main event competitors Dominick Cruz and Urijah Faber together at the same time. Imagine that in this make-believe scenario, fans arrive and are told they could choose only one of the two fighters to meet. Out of the two resulting lines, there’s little doubt the one on Faber’s side would stretch significantly longer.

Wanderlei Silva and Chris Leben have opposite outlooks on fighting

    June 29, 2011

Out of the 10 fighters who took part in the UFC 132 open workouts at the MGM Grand Wednesday afternoon, only one gave an impassioned speech to the assembled fans thanking them for their support. It was unsurprisingly Las Vegas-based Wanderlei Silva, who would say the only thing he loves more than the fans who made him famous during his days in PRIDE is putting on a fighting spectacle for them in the cage.

Dominck Cruz and Urijah Faber return animosity to the octagon at UFC 132

    June 28, 2011

If the UFC has missed anything in recent events, it’s bitterness between its headlining fighters. Out of 11 cards so far this year, only one main event — a UFC 126 middleweight title bout between Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort — has pitted two fighters against each other who undeniably didn’t get along.

UFC 132’s Tito Ortiz isn’t ready to call it quits

    June 27, 2011

Three light heavyweight fighters stood above the rest in terms of star power when the UFC rocketed into popularity nearly a decade ago — Chuck Liddell, Randy Couture and Tito Ortiz. In the last six months, both Liddell and Couture have retired. Liddell announced his plans to step away before UFC 125, while Couture made a UFC 129 bout against Lyoto Machida his final fight. “Is it time for me?” Ortiz wondered out loud last month while in Las Vegas. “I don’t know. I guess time will tell. I’m a lot younger than both of them, but I’ve been doing it as long as Couture and a lot longer than Liddell. I’ve had no serious injuries and I want to fight. I want to win. I want to compete.”

Long-awaited bout between Leben and Silva must live up to potential at UFC 132

    June 21, 2011

If Wanderlei Silva and Chris Leben toss punches with as little caution as they have spit words to hype their meeting, then the UFC 132 crowd at Mandalay Bay in two weeks is in for a thrill. Silva (33-10-1 MMA, 3-5 UFC) and Leben (25-7 MMA, 11-6 UFC) requested a fight and called each other out for nearly a year before UFC brass scheduled the bout for the co-main event of the July 2 card. With the fight nearing, the two fan favorite middleweights aren't tempering expectations.

Urijah Faber preparing for summer of opportunities with UFC

    May 12, 2011

Urijah Faber considers himself a man of his word. If anyone can attest to that, it’s probably teammate Chad Mendes. Faber, the top contender for the UFC bantamweight belt, recently recalled a conversation he had with Mendes, the No. 1 contender for the UFC featherweight crown, in 2008. Faber made Mendes a promise while trying to convince him to join his training squad, Team Alpha Male, in Sacramento, Calif.
