Clay Guida shows evolution as a fighter in ‘TUF’ 13 finale victory over Anthony Pettis

    June 5, 2011

Clay Guida wasn’t always capable of winning fights like Saturday’s contest with Anthony Pettis at the Palms. Oh, Guida knew he had the ability to beat top-tier lightweights like Pettis. But Guida’s downfall was continually his inability to stick to his game plan or fight to his strengths. Guida would oblige when the top 155-pound fighters in the world goaded him into wars, the style of fights they knew gave them an edge. Guida swore his approach had changed since the beginning of last year.

Clay Guida beats Anthony Pettis at ‘TUF’ 13 finale

    June 4, 2011

The Pearl at the Palms is the smallest venue the UFC uses to hold fight cards. It didn’t sound like it Saturday night at “The Ultimate Fighter” 13 finale when Clay Guida was in the octagon. Guida gave his glut of fans plenty to cheer about by defeating former WEC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis.

TUF’ 13 finale weigh-in: Nijem and Ferguson set to duel for UFC contract

    June 3, 2011

Ramsey Nijem and Tony Ferguson shook hands and kept their distance while posing for a staredown photo after making weight for their Ultimate Fighter 13 finale bout Friday at the Palms. Although the two don’t particularly like each other, they see no reason to add extra fuel to their matchup. Their foremost dream already hangs in the balance. Nijem, who weighed in at 170 pounds, and Ferguson, who tipped the scales at 169, will fight for a $100,000 UFC welterweight contract and The Ultimate Fighter championship Saturday night.

    June 3, 2011

Fans at the Palms for Saturday’s “The Ultimate Fighter” season 13 finale fight card need not be alarmed when Anthony Pettis stands in front of his corner before his headlining bout against Clay Guida. No matter what they think, they aren’t suffering from double vision. The man behind Pettis with the identical face and matching mannerisms isn’t an imaginary image or a smaller clone. It’s Anthony’s little brother, 17-year old Sergio Pettis.

Clay Guida sees weekend fight as a way to steal Anthony Pettis’ momentum

    June 3, 2011

Anthony Pettis has plenty of reasons why he handpicked Clay Guida as his next opponent. Guida doesn’t need to hear any of them. He’s made up his mind on how he feels about the situation. “I think it’s the biggest mistake he’s ever made in his career,” Guida said. “I think it’s great for me, not so great for him.”

  • The Ultimate Fighter Season 13 fighter Anthony Ferguson.

Tony Ferguson rides knockout streak into ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ finale this weekend

    June 1, 2011

A coach of UFC hopeful Tony Ferguson once invited a child from a neighboring church to come and watch workouts in his gym. After the youngster witnessed Ferguson beat up a handful of training partners, he muttered two words — “El Cucuy”. “In Spanish, it’s ‘the bogeyman’,” Ferguson explained earlier this year on the set of ‘The Ultimate Fighter’. “I’m pretty scary. It’s like my alter ego when I get in the cage.”

Anthony Pettis fueled by remarks from Gray Maynard

    May 18, 2011

As two of the top lightweights in the world, it’s easy to see UFC top contender Gray Maynard and former WEC champion Anthony Pettis fighting sometime in the near future. The two have created some intrigue in the matchup through their words recently. Maynard, a Las Vegas native, spoke negatively about Pettis in an interview earlier this month. Pettis, who fights out of Milwaukee, responded while in Las Vegas last week.

  • The Ultimate Fighter Season 13 fighter Ramsey Nijem.

The Ultimate Fighter’ episode recap: Ramsey Nijem impresses and entertains

    April 21, 2011

The fourth episode of the 13th season of “The Ultimate Fighter” portrayed 22-year old UFC hopeful Ramsey Nijem as a playful guy with an in-the-moment personality. Nijem danced around the ‘TUF’ house, made his fellow cast mates uncomfortable with jokes and painted his toenails purple. His sporadic behavior during the episode wasn’t a misrepresentation or the result of liberal editing. Nijem has always acted on a whim. For proof, look no further than how his mixed martial arts career started.

  • The Ultimate Fighter Season 13 fighter Chris Cope.

The Ultimate Fighter’ episode recap: Chris Cope slides past Javier Torres

    April 7, 2011

The winner of the 13th season of “The Ultimate Fighter” will not be from Las Vegas. The only fighter based out of Las Vegas, Javier Torres, lost a unanimous decision in the second episode of the season, which aired Wednesday night on Spike. The 23-year old Torres out-grappled San Diego-based UFC hopeful Chris Cope in the first round of their fight, but was visibly exhausted after that. Cope, 28, landed enough strikes in the second and sudden death rounds to advance in the competition.

  • The Ultimate Fighter Season 13 fighter Shamar Bailey.

Shamar Bailey uses wrestling background to start ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ with a win

    March 31, 2011

Fighting was a foreign concept to “The Ultimate Fighter” season 13 competitor Shamar Bailey six years ago. Unlike many college wrestlers, Bailey never considered a career in mixed martial arts an option while becoming a standout wrestler at Division III Maranatha Baptist Bible College in Watertown, Wisc. “I was never really a big fan of the sport to be honest with you,” Bailey said earlier this year on the ‘TUF’ set.

  • The Ultimate Fighter Season 13 coach Brock Lesnar.

Getting to know the cast of ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ 13

    March 30, 2011

When Brock Lesnar and Junior Dos Santos arrived in Las Vegas to begin their stints as coaches on “The Ultimate Fighter,” many questioned how they would connect with the cast of 14 UFC hopefuls. Lesnar, the former UFC heavyweight champion and WWE personality, is notoriously standoffish when it comes to relationships, keeping more feuds than friends.

Brock Lesnar tries to enjoy experience, sees opportunity in ‘The Ultimate Fighter’

    January 26, 2011

For Brock Lesnar, it’s not so much about what he can do for ‘The Ultimate Fighter.” It’s about what “The Ultimate Fighter” can do for him. That’s why Lesnar, the former UFC heavyweight champion until last October’s loss to Cain Velasquez, ultimately agreed to coach on the 13th season of the show against top heavyweight contender Junior dos Santos. “It’s an opportunity for me to get my title back sooner rather than later,” Lesnar said. “When I beat dos Santos, I get a rematch with Velasquez and then I get my (expletive) belt back. That’s how I’m looking at it.”

    January 12, 2011

Anthony Pettis emerged as the undeniably biggest victim after Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard fought to a draw in the lightweight championship fight at UFC 125. Petti was next in line to receive a shot at the winner before the fight, but the draw forced Dana White to grant Maynard a rematch. Instead of waiting around for the better part of a year to get his title opportunity, Pettis has decided to keep fighting.

  • Brock Lesnar heads back to his corner after the first round of his heavyweight title fight against Shane Carwin Saturday at UFC 116. Lesnar won with a second-round submission.

Brock Lesnar, Junior Dos Santos tapped as next ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ coaches

    January 12, 2011

In the weeks leading up to the announcement of the coaches for the forthcoming 13th season of "The Ultimate Fighter", UFC President Dana White promised a surprise. White delivered on a conference call Tuesday afternoon, naming heavyweights Brock Lesnar and Junior Dos Santos the heads of the show's two teams this spring.
