UFC 121: Lesnar vs. Velasquez

  • Martin Kampmann, of Denmark, attempts to avoid a rear naked choke by Jake Shields during UFC 121 in Anaheim, Calif., on Saturday. Shields won by split decision.

Notebook: Despite sloppy UFC debut, Shields will get welterweight title shot

    October 24, 2010

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Many people will share the same opinion of Jake Shields' highly-anticipated UFC debut, calling it unimpressive and whatnot. But after the former Strikeforce middleweight champ took a split-decision victory over Martin Kampmann on Saturday night in Anaheim, Calif., at UFC 121, UFC President Dana White's mind is still made up. Shields will get a welterweight title shot against the winner of the upcoming Georges St. Pierre-Josh Koscheck battle. Those two will tussle at UFC 124 in Montreal on Dec. 11.

  • Cain Velasquez, top, punches Brock Lesnar during UFC 121 in Anaheim, Calif., on Saturday. Velasquez won by TKO in the first round.

    October 23, 2010

ANAHEIM, Calif. — All of the talk entering Saturday night's main event at UFC 121 was whether heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar could go with a well-conditioned Cain Velasquez into the deep waters of the fourth and fifth rounds. Everyone who wondered that was left guessing, as Velasquez unseated Lesnar and became the new UFC heavyweight title-holder via TKO with 48 seconds to go in the first round at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.

  • Weigh-ins subdued with highly-anticipated UFC 121 on deck

    October 22, 2010

ANAHEIM, Calif. — More than an estimated 2,000 people showed up for a subdued weigh-in session on Friday, leading up to the UFC's most loaded fight card in 2010. A few of the small highlights included ...

  • Jake Shields answers questions from the media during UFC 121's open workouts at the UFC gym in Rosemead, Calif.

Shields, Kampmann both have plenty to gain in UFC 121 co-main event

    October 22, 2010

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Though Martin Kampmann won't come out and say it's how he feels as his UFC 121 co-main event battle looms, no one would blame the welterweight vet for feeling slighted. At Saturday night's tussle, he'll square off against Jake Shields, who makes his long-awaited UFC debut armed with a 14-fight win streak, a unanimous top-10 pound-for-pound ranking and a whole mess of hype behind him.

  • John Hathaway, top, punches Diego Sanchez during UFC 114 on Saturday, May 29, 2010, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Hathaway won the welterweight bout by unanimous decision.

Sanchez admits lack of focus last time out, hopes to rebound against Thiago

    October 22, 2010

ANAHEIM, Calif. — As has become his routine, UFC welterweight Diego Sanchez on Thursday turned his open workout session — for most fighters, just a bit of light shadow-boxing for the fans — into a full-on training session. Spending more than an hour in the cage at the UFC gym in Rosemead, Calif., he worked up a sweat, did a bit of everything, and ended the run by working on a dummy on the ground against the chain-link fencing. As he slugged at it, he let out primal grunts that grabbed the attention of everyone in attendance.

  • A champion again, Brock Lesnar carries his belt out of the octagon after his heavyweight title fight against Shane Carwin Saturday at UFC 116 on July 3, 2010. Lesnar won with a second-round submission.

Lesnar shows sunnier disposition as showdown with Velasquez nears

    October 21, 2010

ANAHEIM, Calif. — There's the Brock Lesnar you see on television and through the words and opinions of the media, then there's the private Brock Lesnar, who, well, no one ever sees. The truth is that it's unlikely the latter Lesnar will ever be known by the masses, and he likes it that way. What is gradually evolving, though, is the Lesnar you do know. That version of the UFC heavyweight king was on full display at Wednesday's UFC 121 press conference in downtown Los Angeles.

  • The Ultimate Fighter contestant Chris Camozzi.

Chris Camozzi knows what it feels like to have his dreams taken away from him. Fortunately, for the UFC middleweight, he also knows what it feels like to get them back.

UFC 158
Nick Diaz fails to back up years worth of talk

UFC 158 A welterweight title fight that felt incredibly different wound up remarkably the same. Georges St. Pierre manhandled nemesis Nick Diaz with his wrestling. St. Pierre won every round on every judges' scorecard in Montreal for his sixth straight unanimous-decision victory. Diaz had preached his superiority over St. Pierre for years, but when he finally got his chance, he looked as helpless as all the other challengers to the 170-pound division's throne in the last six years. St. Pierre's consistency continued to amaze. Now it's on to Johny Hendricks, who defeated Carlos Condit in the evening's co-main event. Could he be the one to finally threaten St. Pierre?
