With only three teams in Southern Nevada part of the state’s 3A division, every contest between those teams has playoff-type significance. The Bulldogs brought along playoff-type intensity and shut out Boulder City 29-0.

For Virgin Valley, it’s always a special feeling to come into Las Vegas and leave with a victory. It happened for the first time this season Friday night when the Bulldogs traveled to Mojave and easily disposed of the Rattlers, 33-0.

As recently as two weeks ago, Daniel Gleave engaged in a fierce competition with Humberto Urias for the Virgin Valley starting quarterback job. Urias ultimately seized the job, but it appears Gleave found his own niche. Gleave caught a touchdown pass from Urias and recorded an interception Friday night as Virgin Valley shut out Kanab (Utah) 16-0.

An old football coaches saying indicates the best thing about freshmen are they become sophomores. For Virgin Valley coach Kirk Hafen, he hopes the same is true of juniors turning into seniors. The Bulldogs struggled through a 3-7 season in 2009 relying heavily on their junior class.

Legacy notched its fifth win of the season Friday night with a 63-7 pounding of Virgin Valley. The game followed the same pattern as all of the Longhorns’ wins have this season: They gave the ball to senior running back DeShae Edwards and he piled up the yards.
