Moapa Valley is keeping the hammer once again. The Pirates won their eighth straight “Hammer Game” against heated rival Virgin Valley Friday night. This one wasn’t even close, as Moapa Valley thrilled its home crowd with a 47-6 blowout victory.

Malik Davis can sometimes get lost behind the considerable shadows of Eric Wilkes and Iquan Corsey in the Desert Pines backfield. Not on Friday. With Corsey missing the game and the Jaguars needing someone to make up for the absence, Davis had his best game of the season in a 41-28 home triumph over Virgin Valley.

If Virgin Valley coach Chris Sawyers graded his team’s performance Friday night against Pahrump Valley, he’d award the defense an easy A. The offense? Well, let’s just say Sawyers would add a few more red marks. It was no matter, however, as Virgin Valley blitzed its way to a 41-8 victory and improved to 2-0 on the year.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL:
Vestiges of last decade’s Las Vegas High dynasty, in which the Wildcats won two state championships, still remain in the local high school football community. One piece has drifted 85 miles north to Mesquite as former Vegas High assistant Chris Sawyers starts his tenure as Virgin Valley’s coach this season.

A Dylan Mortensen extra point in overtime saved Moapa Valley from a shocking first round playoff upset to rival Virgin Valley Saturday afternoon. Mortensen booted the extra point through the uprights moments after his brother, Conner Mortensen, broke through in the end zone. Moapa Valley escaped with a 13-12 victory at home.

Coronado closed its season on a high note Thursday by defeating visiting Virgin Valley 36-16. Senior running back Chris Johnson rushed for three touchdowns in the victory and led Coronado to one of its best offensive outputs of the year.

high school football: Moapa held rival Virgin Valley to less than 40 yards of total offense
OVERTON — Legend has it, at least by the understanding of Brent Lewis, that the hammer Moapa Valley and Virgin Valley play for annually in football spent more than 30 years in Mesquite. The rival 3A high schools began competing for the de facto trophy in the 1950s, but had to stop in the 1970s when the prank of stealing the hammer from the winning team became too prevalent. The hammer wasn’t reintroduced until the two schools’ principals reached an agreement in 2007.<
