After a one-year hiatus, Valley is back in the playoffs. Valley defeated Sunrise Mountain 42-13 Thursday night. The Vikings win coupled with Rancho’s loss gave them the No. 4 seed in the Northeast division.

Leon Hayes scored four touchdowns Thursday to lead the Desert Pines High football team past visiting Valley, 35-0. Hayes, a senior with a scholarship offer from UTEP, had two rushing touchdowns, and also found the end zone on an interception and kickoff return. After opening the season with four straight defeats, Desert Pines has won its last two games.

Valley coach Marcus Sherman wasn’t planning on getting much sleep Friday night. He couldn’t imagine doing anything other than thinking about his team’s 35-34 victory over Rancho. The Vikings won one of the more memorable high school football games in Southern Nevada history in five overtimes.

Canyon Springs (5-2, 5-0) received a minor scare Friday with Valley (1-7, 1-5). The Vikings played right with the Pioneers for most of the night and had the lead for a while in the game. But Canyon Springs eventually prevailed in a 20-6 win behind a defense that caused five turnovers.
