Liberty junior running back Niko Kapeli ran for more than 200 yards in five of his team’s nine games this regular season. He’s also one-for-one in eclipsing the 200-yard milestone in the postseason after Friday night. Kapeli rushed for 257 yards on 20 carries as Southeast Division champion Liberty pounded Northeast No. 4 seed Valley 42-6.

Leon Hayes scored four touchdowns Thursday to lead the Desert Pines High football team past visiting Valley, 35-0. Hayes, a senior with a scholarship offer from UTEP, had two rushing touchdowns, and also found the end zone on an interception and kickoff return. After opening the season with four straight defeats, Desert Pines has won its last two games.

Valley coach Marcus Sherman wasn’t planning on getting much sleep Friday night. He couldn’t imagine doing anything other than thinking about his team’s 35-34 victory over Rancho. The Vikings won one of the more memorable high school football games in Southern Nevada history in five overtimes.

New coach hoping to return Valley to winning ways

First-year Valley High coach Marcus Sherman envisions leading the Vikings back to their winning ways of the past. A powerhouse in the 1970s and 80s, Sherman knows his first task in the rebuilding process starts with getting more of the school’s students interested in joining the team.
